Elizabeth Park

One of Adelaide's northernmost suburbs, Elizabeth Park is now part of the Playford municipality which is quite fitting as the late lamented Sir Thomas Playford, who served a Commonwealth record term as State Premier from 1938 to 1965, was the man who named the purpose built city of Elizabeth back in the 1950s.

At that time of course, it was Australia's second city to be built in the 20th century on open plains. The first was the national capital, Canberra.

The residential region, which also embraces Munno Para, was developed to absorb the population explosion which was driven by the post-World War II immigration program.

The suburb lies a few kilometres to the west of Para Wirra Park, one of the major recreational reserves in the greater Adelaide metropolitan area.

The 1409ha park is set in rolling bushland 40km north-east of the Adelaide CBD and embraces an extensive network of picnic shelters, tennis courts, walking trails, gas barbecues, public toilets and kiosk and information centre.
