Cockatoo Valley

The original settlement of Arno Vale was settled by John Hallett in 1840 on the fringe of where the current settlement lies. It was later named for the flocks of cockatoos that congregated in the ancient old gums surrounding the town. Its convenient rural location and only 8km from Gawler and has seen recent land subdivisions for people seeking a country lifestyle. Sandy Creek and Para Wirra Conservation Parks and Barossa Goldfields are a short drive away, and the local general store can provide fuel and provisions seven days a week.

Cockatoo Valley: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Gawler Golf Club

Established in 1904, Gawler Golf Club was a founding member of Golf SA (formerly South Australian Golf Union).

The course has undergone continual improvement and development over the past 100 years. It is now an 18-hole, par 72 (ACR 73), 6095 metre course located at Sandy Creek, at the entrance to the Barossa, just 50 minutes from the Adelaide central business district.

Thanks to our dedicated and professional team of grounds staff, the course is revered as having some of the best greens in the State, certainly outside of the metropolitan area. Our fairways are maintained year round to provide a lush and consistent playing surface. We also provide significant practice areas for members and visitors to hone their skills or to warm up prior to a round.

A fully licensed bar provides the opportunity to relax and enjoy our facilities pre, during and post round.

Our PGA Professional Golf Shop also caters for all your equipment and coaching needs.

Green fees vary - please refer to website for costs.

Whispering Wall

The Whispering Wall is in fact the retaining wall of the Barossa Reservoir. Built between 1899 and 1903, the dam was a revolutionary engineering feat for its day and attracted attention from all over the world, even making its way into the pages of the journal Scientific American.

But what draws visitors to the Whispering Wall is its unique acoustic effects: words whispered at one side can be clearly heard at the other, more than 100 metres away. Children in particular love visiting the wall and testing its abilities.

Besides trying out the Whispering Wall, visitors can also learn about the history of the construction of the dam, take in the scenery of the water reserve and enjoy the colours and sounds of the peaceful bush setting.

To visit the Whispering Wall, travel to Williamstown in the Barossa Valley and follow the signposts from the main street.
