Ardrossan

An easy 90 minute drive from Adelaide on the east coast of Yorke Peninsula, Ardrossan sits on top of imposing red cliffs providing excellent views of Gulf St Vincent. Wander down the jetty at sunrise to see the cliffs' amazing display of colour in the morning light. If Blue Swimmer Crabs are your favourite, then this is the place to be; drop a net from the jetty or rake in the shallows and you won't be disappointed. Fishing from the jetty or boat will often return you a catch of Tommy Ruffs, Mullet, Garfish, squid or the prized King George Whiting. A sought after holiday destination, Ardrossan offers you a wonderful place to enjoy spectacular coastline and all of the activities it has to offer. A main agricultural centre for surrounding districts, Ardrossan is a well serviced town offering good shopping and facilities. Drop in to the golf club or Ardrossan Motel Hotel. Ardrossan Museum is located in the former factory of CH Smith, developer of the Stump Jump Plough. This plough has legendary status in South Australia's history and is at the heart of the Ardrossan Museum's displays. Ardrossan has a temperate climate with regular sea breezes. The maximum temperature is usually a few degrees cooler than Adelaide. The town was proclaimed in 1873 and named by Governor Fergusson after Ardrossan in Ayrshire, Scotland. The jetty was built in 1876 and proclaimed a port in 1878. Early European settlers new the area as 'Clay Gully' or 'Parara'. A busy grain port, produce was carried along the jetty by horse-drawn trolleys to the ships and hand loaded by skilful deckhands to ensure the load was secure in rough seas. Steamers also provided a passenger service to Port Adelaide on Tuesdays and Fridays, which took four hours to make the crossing in good weather. South Australia's first silo was erected at the site in 1952 and today the silos can handle in excess of 250,000 tonnes of grain.

Ardrossan: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Ardrossan Historical Museum

When Ardrossan folk talk of the sea they look to the land. And amidst the agricultural machinery in the Ardrossan Historical Museum you will see why.

Ardrossan Historical Museum is located in the powerhouse of the former factory of Clarence H. Smith who patented, developed and manufactured the Stump Jump Plough. This plough has legendary status in South Australia's history and is at the heart of the Ardrossan Museum's displays. The factory which started in 1880 and closed in 1934 went on to make many other types of farm machinery.

A small room contains relics from the sailing ship Zanoni, which sank off Ardrossan on her maiden voyage in 1867, now declared an historic site.

A display on the 'Mosquito Fleet', the many ketches serving Ardrossan right up to the 1950s, shows the dependence of the area on the sea trade for shipping out grain, dolomite and salt. The original Harbour Masters Office from the jetty has now been renovated and set up as an old time store.

Many other photographs, books and artefacts also portray the history of Ardrossan, a very busy seaside town.

So when Ardrossan folk talk of the land they look to the sea.

Zanoni Shipwreck

The Zanoni, located 10 nautical miles off the coast of Ardrossan, is one of the best-preserved sailing shipwrecks in Australia and one of the most complete 19th century shipwrecks in South Australia.

The 338 ton, three masted sailing vessel Zanoni was on a voyage from Port Wakefield to London with a cargo of wheat and bark. While it sank in 1865 in a freak storm, it was not discovered until 1983, when a fisher took two divers to investigate a likely spot. The shipwreck site is located in 18 metres of water, 15 kilometres south east of Ardrossan. This discovery has since lead to the site being surveyed by archaeologists and a number of artefacts being recovered, some of which can be found in the Ardrossan National Trust Museum.

The Zanoni is a popular wreck for divers to explore. A permit is needed from the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources to visit the site. In 1984, a barge was sunk, one nautical mile south of the Zanoni to act as an alternative place to fish.

For more information on the Zanoni visit the Ardrossan Museum - open Sundays and Public Holidays from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.
