Caltowie

Originally known as 'Carcowie' (lizard's water hole), Caltowie is a small town keen to welcome you!

When European settlement began in the mid 1800s, Caltowie was used as a camping ground for teamsters hauling timber, as the Yackamoorundie Creek provided a good place to refresh the animals. People travelling north to the forests or south to the Burra copper mines would stop, revive and water their animals. Still a great watering hole today, Caltowie is a great place to stop and rest a while.

If you are a mountain biker or long distance hybrid rider, then Caltowie is a great stop just off the Mawson Trail. The Mawson Trail crosses over the road that goes from Gladstone to Caltowie, and then it's just a short eight kilometre ride from there to Caltowie to enjoy a refreshing beer at the pub.

Road cyclists can ride south-west to Gladstone, east to Jamestown, north-west to Stone Hut or west to Laura. Some great undulating roads make the region perfect to get your heart pumping.

Caltowie's largest building and focal point for the community is the historic hotel - it's a good place to feed the family, or simply have a quiet beer with the locals.

If the kids are getting a little impatient, stop at the playground to let them have a run around, where public toilets are also available.

Caltowie is close to Laura, Gladstone and Jamestown where visitors will find needs such as fuel, post offices and supermarkets. Caltowie's Baptist Church has services every Sunday.

The local pub offers comfortable rooms, and there is also accommodation available in the nearby towns of Gladstone, Laura and Jamestown.

The information board in town is a good place to read about the history of the region, or you can drop in at the pub for visitor information. From Caltowie it's only a short drive to Appila Springs reserve; a nice spot to bring a picnic and swim in the cool water.

For further information call in at the local pub.
