Mintaro Slate Quarries

Slate has been quarried in Mintaro since the mid 1860s and was extensively used in the old colonial homes and public buildings of Mintaro.

Acknowledged as one of the best slates in the world, some aspects of production have remained unchanged since the 1860s. Today, efficiency in handling and cutting slate has been increased with the addition of modern mobile processing equipment.

Slate is quarried for domestic and commercial use including flooring, fireplaces and bench tops, patios, paths, gardens and verandas, and is well-known internationally for its use in billiard tables.

Visitors may collect information packs from the production site (turn right at the quarry gates into the car park). No access beyond the car park is permitted.

Due to occupational health and safety regulations we are unable to allow the public free access to the quarry site and processing plant. Group or club visits may be arranged by appointment only, depending on production restraints.

Polish Hill River Church Museum

The Polish Hill River Church Museum has been established by the South Australian Polish community in order to document and commemorate the contribution of Polish migrants to the development of the state.

The Polish Hill River Church Museum is situated in a picturesque valley, a few kilometres south of the Jesuit church and winery at Sevenhill. The valley is home to Paulette's, Pikes' and Wilson wineries, all of which have tasting and cellar-door sales facilities available.

Polish Hill River is within easy reach of the historic settlements of Mintaro, Penwortham and Sevenhill with its winery and cemetery in which many Polish pioneers are buried.

From the early 1850s onwards, numbers of Poles migrated to the area. Here they set up a community of more than 300 people at its largest, with its own priest, church and school, the playground language of which was Polish.

Pikes Wines

Pikes is a family owned winery, established in 1984 by Neil and Andrew Pike. Over the years the business has grown, but Pikes still has plenty of charm and character.

Adjacent to the cellar door is a beautifully landscaped area for visitors to sit, relax and enjoy a delicious picnic grazing plate and a glass of wine or a Pikes Beer. The grounds are also available to host weddings, wedding photos and other celebrations.

Along with the tasting room we have the Gallery @ Pikes that showcases high quality art works from a variety of artists, the exhibitions changing every two months.

The Pikes Beer range is now proudly brewed at Pikes Polish Hill River Estate in its new 20HL craft brewery.
