Close by you can see Pekina Station Ruins. Be amazed by the infamous Magnetic Hill. Magnetic Hill is a well-known tourist attraction because of its ability to make vehicles appear as if they are rolling uphill. Visit Carinya to experience 13 kilometres of self four-wheel driving in unspoilt bushlands.

Pekina: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Magnetic Hill

Taking your vehicle to Magnetic Hill is one of those things that you must do if you want to experience something that is just a little bit different from anything else. Park your car on the side of the hill and watch it role uphill.

Magnetic Hill was formerly known as Bruff's Hill, a name that originated from 35-year-old James Bruff, of Willunga, settling on Section 206, Head of Black Rock Plain, in 1897.

Murray Catford, a former farmer of Tarcowie/Bully Acre, tells the tale of an acquaintance that, in the 1930's, had acquired his first motorcar. He was driving in the vicinity of Bruffs Hill and happened to get a puncture right on the section of the road now known as Magnetic Hill. He did the right thing - put a stone in front of one of the wheels before jacking up the vehicle - only to have it roll uphill.

Orroroo Markets

The Orroroo Market, held on the fourth Sunday of every second month (March, May, July, September and November) is a great outing for everyone.

Stalls are presented out of an old 1880 Blacksmith's Shop which has been renovated as a function centre named Blacksmith's Chatter, giving the market a great feel.

Come and browse over 23 stalls with offerings including wine, honey, art and craft, dips and oils, native plants, children's clothing, quilts, jewellery, wood and craft paper products and collectables.

While there enjoy the many baked goods, kangaroo pies and hot food available to purchase, or sip a cappuccino.

On Saturday 11 October 2014, a mini field day will see the market open in conjunction with the Orroroo Quilters Exhibition. There will be men's stalls, ladies stalls and a jumping castle for the kids.

Though on one of the regions back roads, the site is central to several historic and appealing towns, including Laura, Wirrabara and Jamestown. The camping is in a quiet nook accessible off Appila-Tarcowie Rd and has public toilets and a picnic area.

Bring your own firewood, water and stove. Unfortunately no camping is permitted during the November-April fire-ban season.
