Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens

The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens are located in Hobart, Tasmania's harbour side capital city.
Established in 1818 on the western banks of the Derwent River, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens covers 13.5 hectares and showcases 6,500 species and varieties of plants, including over 400 Tasmanian species.
You can take a guided tour to see features including the largest public conifer collection in the southern hemisphere including Wollemi pines, the peaceful Japanese garden and stunning Conservatory. Breathe in the perfume of the traditional herb garden and visit the Tasmanian Community Food Garden. See rare plants from Macquarie Island in the sub-Antarctic plant house and stroll along historic Arthur Wall, designed to be internally heated to grow exotic plants in Tasmania's cool climate. The Gardens also has a seasonal display of annuals, including a breathtaking spring tulip display-focus of the yearly Spring Community Festival.
You can browse the range of Gardening tools, books and seeds, exclusive Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens souvenirs and giftware in the Botanical Shop, or enjoy a meal or snack in the Gardens restaurant and kiosk.

Contemporary Art Tasmania

Contemporary Art Tasmania is Tasmania's professional, public presentation platform dedicated to contemporary and experimental art. Its provenance is traceable from the foundation of Chameleon contemporary art space in 1982, through 20 years operating as Contemporary Art Services Tasmania (CAST) and, from 2013, as Contemporary Art Tasmania. Contemporary Art Tasmania provides a program of high quality, experimental visual arts exhibitions characterised by innovation and energy. Exhibitions are developed for the organisation's gallery space as well as in other venues around the state and nationally. Contemporary Art Tasmania provides assistance to specifically support, stimulate and develop Tasmanian contemporary artists and their practice. We initiate and present projects that provide artists with industry networking and critical engagement. Mentorship opportunities in curatorship and governance are also offered and managed. We maintain a program to assist the Tasmanian public gallery sector to research and tour exhibitions. Contemporary Art Tasmania also hosts public programs designed to foster and educate audiences in new and experimental art. Our gallery is located in North Hobart close to the Elizabeth Street restaurant strip.

Tench - Penitentiary Chapel Historic Site - The

One of Australia's most significant convict precincts is only a short walk or Red Decker bus ride from Hobart's CBD (at the 'Old Hobart Gaol' stop).
The Tench, as it was known by its inhabitants, was the convict prisoners' barracks for Hobart Town. It originally spanned over two acres and some 50,000 male convicts passed through the complex. Following the cessation of convict transportation, the site became Hobart Gaol for more than 100 years.
Sections of the chapel were converted into two Supreme Courts connected by tunnels to the gaol. An execution yard and gallows were added.
This fascinating history can still be discovered in the buildings which remain - a captivating insight into over 175 years of Hobart's shadier past.
Access to all areas is by guided tour and events only, book via our online booking system.
National Trust Shop access available at all times during opening hours.
