Miena

This small shack-village on the shores of Great Lake in Tasmania's central highlands has excellent trout fishing and stunning scenery.
Great Lake is 22 km long and has the distinction of being the highest lake in Australia. It offers good fishing and good walks along the shore and there are plenty of opportunities for bird watching or simply relaxing by the waterside. However, be warned; this is one of the coldest places in Tasmania and in winter the stunning snow-covered landscape is best enjoyed by a log fire.
Accommodation in and around Miena includes lakeside hotels and self-contained lodges and shacks.
Miena is a 1 hr 30-min drive (110 km) south from Launceston and a 1 hr 40-min drive (132 km) north from Hobart.

Miena: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Waddamana Power Station Museum

The Waddamana Power Station, located almost in the geographical centre of Tasmania, is now a fascinating hydro-electric museum.
It is a tribute to the beginning of integrated hydro-electric development in Tasmania, featuring an array of machinery, memorabilia, photographs and artefacts. In 1916 electricity generated by harnessing the power of falling water "hydro-electricity", first came to Hobart from Waddamana Power Station.
The museum provides visitors with a sense of what life in the central highlands was like back in the early 1900s. Exhibits include an extensive photographic display, original machinery, memorabilia and artefacts from the power station and the people.
Tours can be booked for groups of ten people or more.
Accommodation is available at the Waddamana Field Study Centre, which is the original village built to accommodate workers who constructed Waddamana.

Arthurs Lake

This popular angling location, east of Great Lake on the edge of the Central Plateau, has good facilities for boat launching and camping. To reach Arthurs Lake from the south, take the A5 for 50 km beyond Bothwell. From the north, follow the B51 for 60 km south of Cressy.
This is a high altitude and exposed location and weather in the highlands can change fast, making boating conditions dangerous. Please carry all required safety equipment and check local weather forecasts before you launch.
