Launceston's Gorge Scenic Chairlift

Launceston's Gorge Scenic Chairlift lets you view magnificent Cataract Gorge from above, located in Northern Tasmania.
Take in the spectacular features of Cataract Gorge from this single-span chairlift. View the South Esk River in a serene or turbulent mood after a flood as well as tree rhododendrons and fern glades.
It takes about eight minutes to take the ride across Cataract Gorge and First Basin. Top speed is a sedate one metre per second, but usually the chairlift runs slower than that to afford passengers a longer ride.
It is about 457 metres (1462 feet) from station to station, with a central span between two pylons of 308 metres (985 feet), believed to be the longest single span of any chairlift in the world. Since its opening in 1972, the chairlift has established a 100 percent safety record.
Be sure to also wander the grounds below the chairlift, where you can enjoy an outdoor swimming pool, tea rooms and the delightful peacocks who inhabit the area.
Launceston's Gorge Scenic Chairlift is around a 15-minute walk from Launceston's central business district.

Cataract Gorge Reserve

The Cataract Gorge Reserve on the South Esk River is a unique natural formation just minutes from central Launceston.
The Gorge has walking tacks, swimming pool, the world's longest single span chairlift, a restaurant, cafe, a suspension bridge and panoramic lookouts with spectacular views. Peacocks and native wildlife add to the experience.
On the southern side of the river is First Basin, featuring a swimming pool and an open area surrounded by bushland. This part of the Gorge is popular with locals for picnics and barbecues.
On the shady northern side, known as the Cliff Grounds, is a Victorian garden with ferns and exotic plants. Relax on the rolling lawns, take shade under the rotunda and enjoy lunch with a view from the restaurant.
There's also a kiosk and tea rooms where you can enjoy a cup of tea and scones.
Wander across the footbridge that links the two areas or take a chairlift ride across the expansive Gorge.
Further upstream is the historic Duck Reach Power Station, now an interpretation centre and well worth the short walk.
Spend an hour or spend a day: the Gorge has something for everyone.

Trevallyn Dam

Trevallyn Dam is within the Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area on the South Esk River, just outside of Launceston in Tasmania's north and is a great spot for picnics, trail walks and boating on the dam.
Visitors to the reserve can walk along the South Esk River gorge, see the Trevallyn Dam wall in flood and experience cable hang-gliding.
There's also an open grassy reserve that's home to resident wombats and ducks.
Enjoy short walks to lookouts or a longer walk from the gorge past the Trevallyn Power Station.
During summer, the water is ideal for swimming and the shores of Lake Trevallyn are used by the Launceston community for water skiing, kayaking and windsurfing.
Find a spot in the spacious undercover barbecue area to have lunch.
Trevallyn Dam is less than a 10-minute drive from Launceston's CBD.

Here's to the Heroes - A Tribute to those who Served in music and song

Music has long inspired soldiers and theatres of war have been fertile grounds for the arts as an expression of that which was experienced: through songs, verse, prose and art.
Here's to the Heroes will present tunes of glory, songs of lament and the music and pageantry that encouraged the failing spirits of mere mortals in the face of battle and brought comfort at the loss of lifelong mates.
Today we remember them and pay tribute to the fallen soldiers.
With the familiar uniforms of red and black, instruments glinting in the sun, or under the spotlights, this scene is one that alerts the people of the city that the City Of Launceston RSL Band is giving another performance.
Finally, St Andrews Caledonian Pipe Band, formerly the band of the 12th Battalion, whose performance honours also include various Tattoos and performances at Scotland's Edinburgh and Stirling Castles, will complete a stirring line up which includes massed bands performances.
