Providence Vineyards

Providence Vineyard is located near the township of Lilydale, in the Tamar Valley, Northern Tasmania.
Providence was founded by French winemaker Jean Miguet in 1956 and is the oldest of Tasmania's modern vineyards. The two-hectare (five-acre) vineyard produces pinot noir and chardonnay and a small amount of Riesling. The original pinot noir and chardonnay vines planted by Jean Miguet in 1956 still produce fruit used in the current vintages.
You can taste the range of award-winning Providence wines at the cellar door most of the year. Closed Mondays and open most other days. Freecall 1800 992 967 to check. The vineyard also sells a range of other fine Tasmanian wines of older vintages, and your purchased wines can be shipped Australia wide free of charge.
The Tamar Valley is one of Tasmania's premium wine producing regions. The area is characterised by a cool climate, loamy soils and long ripening periods; ideal conditions for high quality grapes and distinctively flavoured wines.
The Vineyard is a 25-minute drive north-east of Launceston (27 km) on the Tamar Valley Wine Route.

St Matthias' Anglican Church

"Visitors gaze on a little village church, simple and unpretentious in design, standing on the grassy river bank, backed with fine trees and reflected in the calm water of the Tamar River" (Frank Heyward, The Examiner 1939).
St Matthias' Anglican Church, surrounded by a beautiful, peaceful 173 year old graveyard, is located in the rural village of Windermere and is a heritage-listed icon in Northern Tasmania. The church was built in 1842 fulfilling a promise by Dr Matthius Gaunt to his young wife before they left England. His wife was concerned that there may not be a church in the area where they would make their home. Dr Gaunt promised that if there was not, he would build one for her. St Matthias' is one of Australia's oldest rural churches and has been in continuous use since its foundation. A Eucharist Service is held every second and fourth Sunday at 1030.
The church has been painted and photographed by many recognised artists. This beautiful bluestone gothic chapel with its romantic history is a popular spot for weddings, baptisms and picnics. The scenic drive around Windermere Road is an easy detour from the East Tamar Highway and offers spectacular river views.
