The Midlands Highway town of Buninyong not only has claims to be the first inland town in Victoria, but also boasts a streetscape that has changed little since the goldminers moved on to Castlemaine and Ballarat in the early 1850s.

It doesn"t matter from where you set out to walk the town, you are surrounded by historic buildings dating back to the 1840s.

And it is one of those quirks of history that, although most of the miners drawn to the area by local blacksmith Thomas Hiscock"s local strike in 1851 deserted to Ballarat, the quartz fields round Buninyong kept producing payable gold well into the 20th century.

Heritage apart, the tourist standout in town is the Flora and Bird Park where you can stroll through rainforest and aviaries housing 25 species of locally-bred native and exotic parrots.

The pick of the regional scenic drives takes you past Mt Bunninyong, through Yendon to Lal Lal Falls and on to Bungal Dam.

A 45-minute climb to the summit of Mt Buninyong is rewarded with views over nearby Ballarat and, weather permitting, on beyond to the distant Grampians.
