Her Majesty's Theatre Ballarat

Her Majesty's Theatre is one of Australia's most historic theatres.

Opened in 1875 Her Maj is the oldest purpose-built theatre building in Australia to have been continuously used as a live theatre venue.

The building boasts a beautifully renovated double-balconied auditorium recently re-seated to offer both comfort and elegance, while boasting state of the art theatre equipment.

The Theatre offers an annual Season of touring professional theatre productions, representing a selection of performances from some of Australia's leading theatre companies.

The Theatre is hired by commercial entrepreneurs for tours by popular artists. It is also a community facility and is hired by local amateur companies and groups for the presentation of their productions, including musical comedies, school concerts and ballet recitals.

Since 1965, Australia's largest and longest-running eisteddfod, the Royal South Street Competitions, have called the Theatre home and occupy the building between mid-August and early November every year.

Her Majesty's has been owned and operated by the City of Ballarat since 1990. Today around 300 performances are presented each year. Tickets are sold through MajesTix, the Theatre Box Office, and information is available on the Theatre's website.

Blood on the Southern Cross

Blood on the Southern Cross tells the dramatic story of the Eureka Uprising by Ballarat's miners against unjust and corrupt colonial rulers. The Eureka Stockade of 1854 was a defining moment in the development of democracy in Australia.

The show is set across Sovereign Hill's 64 acre site. Under the stars, on moonlit diggings, audiences are surrounded by the action and, ultimately, caught in the crossfire as the battle rages.

The production features state-of-the-art lighting and amazing special effects. Peter Lalor is larger than life on an aqua screen. Images of trapeze artists and acrobats fly across a huge circus tent. The Eureka Hotel bursts into flame, and rain falls in a blinding storm.

Blood on the Southern Cross runs for 90 minutes, seven nights a week (subject to availability). Special packages are available that include entry to Sovereign Hill, dinner and accommodation at the Sovereign Hill Lodge.

'State-of-the-art lighting and a dazzling array of special effects are the making of a great sound-and-light show - and Blood on the Southern Cross does not disappoint!'

'Shaping Evolution' Exhibition by Gordon Monro

Unique selection of digital prints accompanied by silent video. The artist draws inspiration for his visual art from a different perspective, that of science and mathematics. His artworks take the form of digital prints, videos and computer-based installations and are created by computer programs written by the artist.

The imaginary creatures in 'Shaping Evolution' were evolved by the computer program. Each creature has 'DNA' (a small amount of data in the computer) that generates its image. The creatures were evolved from random starting DNA by processes of breeding, mutation and survival of the fittest, carried out automatically in the computer program. In some cases, 200 generations of evolution were carried out before the image was created.

Gordon is a resident of Ballarat and has a PhD in Pure Mathematics. He also recently completed his second PhD in Fine Art at Monash University.

In what is probably the last chance to see her live in regional Victoria, Dame Kiri returns to the stage at Her Majesty's to sing some of her favourite songs, accompanied by the brilliant Terence Dennis on piano.
