Steiglitz Historic Park

Situated between Geelong and Ballarat, Steiglitz is almost a ghost town today but in the 1860s and 1890s it was a busy goldmining township with hotels, shops, churches and a population of over 1000. At the height of the 1860s gold rush, Steiglitz township had more than 1500 residents, four hotels, a newspaper, a variety of shops and even an undertaker.

Now most of the town and its surroundings are included in the Steiglitz Historic Park. Enjoy a pleasant bushwalk, relax with a picnic or pan for gold. Of course, a trip to the park wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Steiglitz Court House, with its display of photographs, maps and relics of gold year. The court house is open on Sunday and public holidays, and at other times by arrangement.

Before you go

Heritage Festival: Midsummer Night's Dream at Barwon Park

Theatre of Winged Unicorn presents the Shakespearean play, Midsummer Night's Dream, a particular favourite with its magical elements and fairytale story. The play lends itself to imaginative costuming, insightful and perhaps outrageous character interpretations and energetic performances. Great fun to be involved in, and great fun to watch.

Theatre of the Winged Unicorn is based in the village of Ceres in the Barrabool Hills. It was formed in 1993 by Dennis and Elaine Mitchell and produced many plays and musicals in the ensuing years. Favourites include Gilbert and Sullivan's opera, adaptation from Victoria Classics by the Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy and George Eliot, and adapted works from Jane Austen and the Bronte's. The latest production was Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte in October 2015.

A self-guided tour of Barwon Park Mansion is included. Bookings required.

The National Trust Heritage Festival runs each year in April and May and is a celebration of our shared heritage. Any organisation with an interest in history and heritage can participate.
