Central Goldfields Art Gallery


Central Goldfields Art Gallery in Maryborough is situated in the picturesque historic fire station built in 1861, a short walk from the town centre.

The Gallery's changing exhibition program showcases local and regional artists, and includes diverse touring exhibitions. Community engagement is supported with the annual community art and craft exhibitions and local schools art.

Central Goldfields Art Gallery is a cultural facility of Central Goldfields Shire Council, and in line with Council's Arts and Cultural Policy, the Gallery Collection is exhibited and features artwork by local and regional artists.

Education programs for school children and Friends of the Gallery programs are run throughout the year.

Paddys Ranges State Park


Well-known for its wildflowers in springtime, Paddys Ranges State Park is home to 30 types of orchids and more than 140 native bird species like the rare Painted Honeyeaters and Swift Parrots.

Relics of the goldmining era scattered throughout the park. Visitors can retrace the steps of 'Paddy', a miner who reputedly roamed the area in the 1800s.

Bushwalking, camping and picnicking are popular activities in this beautiful Box-Ironbark forest.

Heritage Festival: 50 Years of Weddings


Maryborough's Wal Richards had a camera and a passion for weddings. For 50 years Wal was the unofficial photographer at weddings in the Maryborough district, cycling to local churches from 1946 until his death in 1997. After he died his family discovered thousands of prints and negatives in a shed at his home.

Join the Maryborough Midlands Historical Society for this fascinating Exhibition.

The National Trust Heritage Festival runs each year in April and May and is a celebration of our shared heritage. Any organisation with an interest in history and heritage can participate.

RACV Energy Breakthrough - Maryborough


The RACV Energy Breakthrough provides an opportunity for students, teachers, parents and local industry to work together to design and construct a vehicle, a machine or innovation in technology that will represent an energy breakthrough.

School groups work throughout the year to design, build and test vehicles or machines within detailed specifications. It requires a team effort and an across-the-curriculum approach. These groups then bring their vehicles and machines to Maryborough, Victoria in November, for a huge celebration in which they can demonstrate and trial them in action.

More than 5,000 student entrants converge on Maryborough, a further 3,000 will work as support crew and another 13,000 will be visitors to the event.

The Energy Expo is amongst the action of the RACV Energy Breakthrough and offers visitors and entrants the chance to relax and enjoy the festive atmosphere. The Energy Expo provides entertainment, fascinating energy efficient displays and opportunities for career advancement.

Heritage Festival: Goldfields Museum in Dunolly


Goldfields Museum is home to many relics and historical displays. It hosts a large collection of WWI and WWII firearms, large replica collections of locally found gold nuggets, including the 'Welcome Stranger' the largest alluvial gold nugget ever found, and displays and information on the township of Dunolly and it's residents.

Opening hours can depend on volunteer availability, so please call ahead to avoid any disappointment.

Heritage Festival: Carisbrook Log Gaol


The town's old log lock-up is thought to have been built around 1851 on the police paddock and moved to its present site in 1886. The walls are made of interlocking horizontally-laid logs. The shingle roof has been replaced with corrugated iron. It's the oldest log jail in Victoria. Special heritage displays will be on show inside, as will George, the resident ghost.

Central Goldfields Visitor Information Centre


Central Goldfields Visitor Information Centre offers a full range of guides and brochures for Central Goldfields and Victoria.

The friendly staff can assist you with finding a full range of souvenirs and locally made craft items all at very reasonable prices, Maryborough Postcards and Gold Nugget Pins.

They also have maps and brochures of Maryborough and surrounding towns. Brochures covering all regions of Victoria and some interstate guides. Accommodation and dining guides, guided tours of Maryborough (on request) plus self guided tour brochures. They also have books and publications on the history of Maryborough and towns within the shire.

Central Goldfields Visitor Information Centre have a fax and photocopying service. As well as clean toilet facilities with baby changing and disabled facilities.

See the life size model of The Welcome Stranger gold nugget (69kgs) and photographs of old Maryborough and their historic buildings, local Parks and Wildlife Information and maps.

The Central Goldfields Visitor Information is located in the Maryborough Resource Centre Building Corner of Nolan and Alma Streets in Maryborough. Also in the building is the Maryborough Library, Community Information Centre and Exhibition Hall.
