Dinner Plain

Nestled between the snow gums on the highest freehold land in Australia, Dinner Plain is an eye-catching alpine village offering attractions for all seasons.

Just only 10 kilometres from Mount Hotham, Dinner Plain is characterised by architecturally designed chalets built from stone, timber and corrugated iron that reflect the heritage of the alpine high country.

Couples, families and groups can all seek a relaxing sanctuary from nearby Mount Hotham during the ski season. The village boasts all the conveniences of a modern ski resort, including a comprehensive ski hire service and ski school. Ski around Dinner Plain's meandering cross-country trails and gentle downhill slope with beginners' poma lift.

When the snow melts and the ski resorts all but close, you'll discover this alpine village in full working order. Spoil yourself at the indoor-outdoor, Japanese-style Onsen Retreat and Spa. Take Sunday high tea with a glass of local sparkling at Rundells Alpine Lodge. Grab a map and walk or bike the village trails amid the splendour of the spring wildflowers, or challenge yourself on the 10-kilometre trail from Mount Hotham.

Play a game of high altitude tennis or saddle up on a horseback riding adventure through the Alpine National Park and enjoy spectacular views and a sense of the local cattlemen history.

You'll get to Dinner Plain on the Hume Highway, turning off at Wangaratta to the all-weather sealed Great Alpine Road. The drive will take around four-and-a-half hours. Don't forget snow chains when going up the mountains during snow season, and take a 4WD if you're planning to head off the main roads.
