Take the time to uncover the fascinating Aboriginal history in Stawell. Make your way out to the nearby Black Ranges to Bunjil's Shelter - a huge rock overhang with rock art depicting Bunjil, an important Aboriginal spirit figure. Stawell is approximately 230 kilometres from Melbourne, or two hours and 40 minutes by car along the Western Highway.

Bunjil Shelter - Stawell


Bunjil Shelter is located in the Black Range Scenic Reserve near Stawell and this is the only rockart painting of Bunjil known. It is widely regarded as one of the most significant cultural sites in south eastern Australia. Bunjil does no harm; I think he does well. These words were spoken by John Connolly, of the Jardwadjali people a little north of here, and recorded by A.W. Howitt. In 1884 Connolly added that Bunjil was a man, and was the father of all his people.

Bunjil Shelter sits within the Gariwerd, a cultural landscape that supports our people both physically and spiritually. Bunjil created our land, our people, the plants and animals, our religion and the laws by which we live. He is the leading figure in our spiritual life, essential in teaching our young people the importance of our laws and beliefs, Levi Lovett, local custodian, Parks Victoria.

Stawell Gift


The Stawell Gift carnival is one of the world's most famous and prestigious professional race meetings.

Run on grass, athletes are handicapped according to form and ability, and start off varying marks accordingly. Athletes race as much for glory as prize money.

Hundreds of athletes compete over distances from 70 metre to 3200 metre for prize money of over $160,000.
The main race is the Stawell Gift which is run over 120 metre up a slight gradient, with the final being held on Easter Monday.

At Easter, Central Park is transformed into an athletics mecca, with the running lanes traditionally separated by ropes, and running through the famous finish gates which are iconic features of the Gift.

Seriously Shiraz Weekend - Music on the Lawn - Swift Revenge

Seriously Shiraz Weekend - Vertical Pinot Meunier Tasting


Over the Melbourne Cup weekend on Monday 6 November, Best's are holding a vertical Pinot Meunier tasting. This will be a set of seven vintages of their famous Pinot Meunier. This wine is produced from what are possibly the world's oldest Pinot Meunier vines, and has been made as a straight varietal since 1967.

Vintages to be tasted are - 1976, 1981, 1992, 1994, 2005, 2009 and the current release, 2016. Seats are limited, 12 only. This will be a small private and relaxed affair, accompanied by the winemaker, some great wines, good banter, and a local tasting platter.

Joy Flights over the Vines


Take a spin over some of the oldest vines in Australia. Join Grampians Helicopters between 11:00am and 4:00pm on Sunday 5 November at Best's Wines in Great Western, Grampians, for a short spin over the vines.

Tastes of Great Western - Dine with The Winemaker Series - Clarnette and Ludvigsen


Steel Cutters Cottage are excited to announce they are continuing their Tastes of Great Western - Dine with The Winemaker long lunches through spring.

September is dedicated to Clarnette and Ludvigsen Wines and Steel Cutters Cottage are honoured that winemaker Leigh Clarnette will be joining them for the afternoon.

Stawell and Grampians Visitor Information Centre


The Stawell and Grampians Visitor Information Centre is conveniently located at Central Park in Main Street, Stawell. Stawell is just 20 minutes from the Grampians, one of the major tourism regions of Victoria. Stawell is most famous for the world's richest footrace, The Stawell Gift, held every year at Easter.

The Visitor Centre provides visitors to the region with up to date, relevant information on attractions and sights. Attractions of interest in Stawell include the Ironbark Forest, Stawell Gift Hall of Fame, Central Park, Big Hill Lookout, several small Art Galleries and the Leisure Centre. Not to be missed is the Stawell Cultural Heritage Trail.
