Rumbling wheat trains are part of the streetscape in the small, Calder Highway town of Wycheproof where the railway line runs down the centre of the main street.

Silos provide more evidence that Wycheproof lies in the heart of Mallee wheat country, 140km north-west of Bendigo.

But grain isn't the absolute king in these parts. Just five kilometres out of town you will find an interesting array of craft shops on the perfectly-named Peppercorn Drive. The town also basks in the shadow of Mt Wycheproof which, at 43m, revels in the title of 'the world's smallest mountain'.

Centenary Park, home to an historic log cabin, offers visitors picnic and barbecue facilities and a children's playground. You can catch up on the past and the pioneers who settled the district in the Willandra Historical and Farm Museum just a gentle stroll on from the park. The museum complex includes a display of heritage material, a vintage farm machinery display, a smithy, 19th century police lock-up and an early school.
