Lorne

With its seaside lifestyle and picture-postcard scenery along with its buzzing arts community and the nearby Otways, Lorne has been attracting eager holidaymakers for more than a century.

Visit the Lorne surf beach, the only patrolled beach in town. The sheltered two-kilometre beach is ideal for families and bordered by lawn, gum trees and picnic and barbecue areas. Cool off in the sparkling waters of Loutit Bay or take a stroll up to Shelley Beach to explore the rock pools.

The nearby Great Otway National Park is a nature lover's playground with misty waterfalls, giant ferns and ancient forest. Discover the Erskine Falls cascading into a beautiful fern gully, one of ten waterfalls within ten minutes of town.

Hit the Surf Coast Walk to see the rich ochre cliffs of Bells Beach and the leafy green eucalypts lining the coast of Bass Strait.

Sipping on a cold beer at the local pub or on the pier as the fishing fleet unloads its catch are both iconic Lorne pastimes. Snap up fresh locally caught seafood at the fishing co-op or reel in your own by casting a line off the pier. Keep an eye out for migrating whales between May and September.

Take time out to wander down Lorne's main shopping strip filled with boutique gift stores, cellars, eateries and galleries. Grab a coffee at a sidewalk cafe, picnic under the trees on the foreshore, or enjoy a seafood feast at a local restaurant.

January's Pier to Pub Swim and Mountain to Surf Run attract large numbers of competitors and ensure a carnival atmosphere. The Great Ocean Road Marathon kicks off in May and the Lorne Adventure Race in December gets the blood pumping.

For those who prefer to get their thrills from the raw energy of rock music, The Falls Festival, held over New Year's Eve, is an essential experience. The Festival of Performing Arts is a weekend of culture by the sea in September.

Lorne is 140 kilometres south of Melbourne, approximately a two-hour drive along the unforgettable Great Ocean Road.

Great Ocean Road Story

Experience The Great Ocean Road Story: Building Australia's Most Famous Road. This purpose built permanent exhibition in the newly constructed Great Ocean Road Heritage Centre is located in the Lorne Visitor Centre.

The Great Ocean Road is a memorial to the lost lives and sacrifices of the Australian diggers in world war one. More than 3000 returned soldiers built the road from 1919 onwards, conquering steep cliffs, rugged terrain and dangerous weather so that the isolated towns along Victoria's stunning western coastline could be joined together.

Since its official opening in 1932, the Great Ocean Road has breathed life into the local communities along it and become a mecca for tourists. It is a engineering marvel.

Come and experience the Great Ocean Road Story.

Qdos Arts and Sculpture Park

Qdos Arts is the epicentre of the vibrant arts scene in Lorne. What began as a gallery, cafe and sculpture park to celebrate the visual, performing and gourmet arts has grown into a complete respite for creative souls even with five Japanese-inspired tree houses.

Owner and artist Graeme Wilkie whose admiration for the Japanese aesthetic led him to develop this quintessential Australian bush setting into a unique blend, a 'living art' experience.

Light is also a theme in the gallery with lofty roof lines and glass to draw in the bushland views. Leading artists are represented and the visual feast is matched by the creative gourmet offerings of the caf?.

The grounds form a natural amphitheatre watched over by the gallery and tree houses, in which major sculptural works blends with tall gums, a peaceful pond and a myriad of birdlife.

If you have an innate reverence for the ordinary things like forest, stone, wood and love for simplicity with the harmony of the natural world, or you need a haven for a weary soul in the natural tranquillity of the Otway Ranges with only the music of nature, Qdos Tree House accommodation is the treat you need.

Eagle Rock Marine Sanctuary

Located at Aireys Inlet, this park protects 17ha of ocean waters and projects about 300m offshore. Composed of both hard basalt and rubbly limestone, the cliffs are full of caves and ledges. The shore is covered with boulders and offshore there are two large rocks: Eagle Rock and Table Rock. Table Rock has been levelled by incessant waves whereas Eagle Rock is a tall volcanic stack capped by limestone.

The intertidal and subtidal, basalt and sandstone reefs provide habitats for many species. The rock platforms are covered in the iconic brown seaweed Neptune's Necklace which is unique to Australia and New Zealand. Within the rockpools you can find fascinating creatures such as octopus, chitons and decorator crabs.

Offshore, Eagle Rock and Table Rock are fringed with swirling Bull Kelp and in deeper waters colourful sea tulips and encrusting sponges can be found. The beautiful habitat provided by these species supports a vast array of marine life from wrasse and mullet to Cat Sharks, Port Jackson Sharks, skates and rays. Many birds use the area as feeding and roosting habitat and at certain times of year you may also be able to spot whales passing through the area.
