Kilmore is one of Victoria's oldest inland settlements and it oozes history. An impressive collection of nineteenth century bluestone buildings line the streets and more than 40 buildings in Kilmore are listed on the Register of National Estate.

Have lunch in a converted old bluestone building, visit the old gaol, built in 1859, then wander through the many specialty shops selling antiques, arts and crafts.

The tramways museum at Bylands is part of the Kilmore heritage experience. Ride on one of the heritage trams, some of which date back to 1906, and view the collection of cable cars and electric trams which comprise the 'preserved tramway fleet' that were all once in service in and around Melbourne and Adelaide.

Hike up Mt Disappointment and see wombats and wallabies and admire the varied bird life. Extreme sports lovers can try hang gliding in Tallarook State Park and visit popular rock climbing sites. Take a scenic drive through the picturesque Valley of a Thousand Hills.

Get along to one of the fun-filled racing days throughout the year at Kilmore Racing Club, which also plays host to the Kilmore Country Music Festival in March.

Kilmore is about an hour from Melbourne along the Hume Highway.

Kilmore: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Monument Hill Reserve

Located an hour north of Melbourne in Kilmore, Monument Hill Reserve is a fantastic recreational area perfect for activities such as bush-walking and horse riding.

Situated at the top of the Hill is the Hume and Hovell monument. This was erected to honour the explorers whose expedition played a significant role in establishing the colony of Victoria. The monument is a watchtower from the former Kilmore Gaol. From the top of the monument visitors can look out over Kilmore and the surrounding countryside.

From the monument, follow one of the walking tracks that leads down the ridge to the golf course, cricket club or Kilmore Hospital Reservoir. Local wildlife is abundant. Lizards, birds, echidnas, kangaroos and wallabies can be spotted around the reserve.

Tramway Heritage Centre

The Tramway Heritage Centre houses an extensive collection of trams from Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Adelaide. Cable trams from 1884, electric trams from across Australia, buses and work trucks are all on show as part of the collection.

Situated in the picturesque Great Dividing Range, the museum showcases an unique view on transport history.

Since the establishment of the Tramway Heritage Centre, the organisation has built up a significant amount of infrastructure including one kilometre of electric tramline on the former Heathcote Junction to Bendigo railway line, tramway electric supply substation, two tram depot buildings and a vehicle storage building for unrestored trams.

The Centre also hosts a cable tramcar storage building, motor vehicle storage building, Visitor Centre (Gallery/Exhibition/Archive Space under development) and Exhibition Goods Shed display building and workshop.

A new exhibition/temporary gallery space is also currently under development with an anticipated opening by the end of 2016.
