Macedon

The folk of Macedon are a resilient bunch. Their town and stunning gardens were devastated in the 1983 bushfires, but within a few years Macedon was back to its floral and green best.

The town in the foothills to the Great Dividing Rage to Melbourne's near north-east is dominated by 1011m Mt Macedon on whose summit stands an impressive memorial cross erected in honour of those who fell in World War I.

This is antique, craft and giftware territory and there is a number of outlets in and around both Macedon and Mount Macedon townships.

This is also good wine-tasting country and, providing you haven't been totally spooked by Joan Lindsay's book or Peter Weir's film, Hanging Rock, 17km to the north-east, offers both challenging climbs and, despite the screen inferences, pleasant picnicking surrounds.

The Hanging Rock Reserve is open every day from 8am to 6pm and visitors can meet native birds, goannas, koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, echidna and gliders in their natural habitat. A Discovery Centre adjoins the café.
