Highett

A pleasant suburb straddling the Nepean Highway in the south of the Melbourne metropolitan area, Highett has major road and rail links to both the city and the resorts and fishing towns and wineries of the Mornington Peninsula.

The closest Port Phillip Bay beaches are about 2km away, while Sandringham Municipal, Victoria and Royal Melbourne golf courses occupy Melbourne's famous golfing sand belt on Highett's southern boundary.

Highett is part of Kingston City Council and a snapshot of the municipality indicates that sport and water recreation are community priorities with 12 world class golf courses, excellent swimming beaches and reserves, five sailing and eight life-saving clubs, a large aquatic centre, the Patterson River marina and a chain of major parks, gardens and wetlands.

The vast Southland Shopping Centre and Moorabbin Airport lie just to the south-west of Highett. Melbourne's second city, Dandenong, and the significant Edithvale Wetlands which environmentalists want restored to all its former glory, are both within comfortable driving distance of Highett.

Kingston Heath Golf Club

Kingston Heath is one of the Golf Clubs of the world famous Melbourne Sandbelt and has hosted numerous national championships including nine Australian Opens.

The Club is the host of the 2009 Australian Masters. The course is currently ranked number 20 in the world and number 11 outside of the United States and is regarded by many, including some of the world's best golfers, as one of Australia's finest golf courses.

Kingston Heath is one of the smallest courses of world renown. The difficulty of the course is centred around its bunkering, which is visually stunning. It is full of all the strategic interest golfers expect of a fine course.

A long course at over 6800 yards when it opened, it is now on the short side of what is regarded as 'championship' length but its genius is that it can still defend itself against the finest players. More importantly, it is a course to constantly stimulate and challenge those who play it with regularity.

Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary

With its rockpools close to shore, Ricketts Point is the perfect place to introduce kids to the wonder of Victoria's underwater marine life. Sandstone platforms are home to an array of marine creatures and are excellent for rockpool exploration. During summer the beach is patrolled by the life saving club, making it a great option for a summer family outing.

Located just near Beaumaris in Melbourne's south east, this sanctuary is 115ha. Bordered by jutting cliffs of sandstone which have been worn down into a series of platforms, sea caves and offshore reefs, this site is easily accessible for all. There are a range of habitats to explore including rocky sandstone intertidal and subtidal habitats, sandy beaches and subtidal soft substrates.

Within the diverse range of habitats at this site, there are many plants and animals which can be found. Near shore, the rocks are covered with green and red algae which shelters a range of invertebrates including brittle stars, bristle worms and crustaceans. The surrounding sandy bottoms are covered by patches of seagrass which attract a range of fish species. In deeper waters, rock bommies are carpeted in either green Caulerpa or brown Sargassum, which hides many small animals. These rocks also attract fish species including Southern Hulafish, scalyfin and morwong. If you look carefully, you may be able to uncover one of the masters of disguise, a cuttlefish. These animals are experts at changing their colour and skin texture to conceal themselves.
