Toomuc Valley: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Cardinia Reservoir Park

Visitors who view the huge expanse of water that is Cardinia Reservoir by the morning light will understand why this is one of Melbourne's most popular outdoor destinations. The open parklands, picnic and barbecue areas, and native bush areas that are home to abundant wildlife and natural flora are a draw card to those seeking a day in a natural setting.

All picnic areas have access and toilets for visitors with limited mobility. Most have barbecues and shelter. Popular spots include Crystal Brook, Duffy's and Kangaroo Flat.

Looking after the park
- Dogs are allowed at Crystal Brook and Duffy's but must be kept on a leash at all times.
- Portable gas barbecues are allowed, but portable barbecues using heat beads or wood are not permitted in the park.

Aura Vale Lake Park

Located north of Cardinia Reservoir, Aura Vale Lake plays a very important role in Melbourne's water supply. The lake forms part of a drainage system designed to channel run-off water from neighbouring properties and roads, and stop it entering the main reservoir. This system prevents polluted water from affecting the quality of our drinking water.

Over the past years Aura Vale Lake Park has become a popular venue for boating activities including sailboarding and canoeing and for other small non-powered boats up to 3.3 metres. Swimming is not permitted due to poor water quality and submerged objects.

The park is open 10am to 6pm during daylight saving time.

Bunyip State Park

See a mosiac of green from heathland on river plains to Mountain Ash forest covering steep slopes. Whatever recreational pursuit you enjoy, Bunyip State Park provides opportunities for all.
The legend of the bunyip

Beware of the Bunyip, a dark furry animal with a round face, small ears and fiery eyes that glow in the dark.

According to the Aboriginal people, the Bunyip or "Buneep" (as spelt on early maps which show the river, first cattle run and township) is a spirit that punishes bad people.

Local Aboriginal people believed the Bunyip lived in the swamps of the Bunyip River, and therefore avoided the area. Many early settlers, believing this story, never pitched their tents near a 'Bunyip hole'. People were also careful not to make ripples when collecting water. This upset the Bunyip.
