The Golden Crown Hotel, a general store, cafe and a bowling club keep the small, north-western Victorian town of Berriwillock on the map. But the portents aren't all that encouraging about the future of this dry country village whose children now have to be bussed 60km every day to and from Sea Lake since the closure of the local school.

Tyrell Downs outside Sea Lake was the property on which the redoubtable E.H. Lascelles introduced innovative farming methods which capped his long campaign to convince the authorities that the long despised Mallee could be converted into productive, agricultural land.

Green Lake, 20km out of Berriwillock, provides water sport and recreation, but only in the good seasons because the lake has to be filled by water from the distant Grampians catchment area.

The largest regional centre of Swan Hill on the Murray River is an hour's drive to the north-east.
