Spurred by local claims that more than 80 per cent of all the major gold nuggets found in the world have been discovered within a 40km radius of Wedderburn, fossickers continue to flock to this Calder Highway town in Victoria's famed Golden Triangle.

The fact that nuggets worth more than $20,000 were discovered in a town backyard in the 1950s is an added incentive for modern-day prospectors, some of whom still leave Wedderburn a little richer.

The historic streetscapes, museum-cum-general store, pottery studios and district conservation parks and scenic reserves add to the appeal of this town 75km north-west of Bendigo.

A 16km drive north from town takes you to Wychitella Forest Reserve which conserves a remnant of mallee forest that is a sanctuary for native wildlife, especially the rare mallee fowl and marsupial mouse. Mallee fowls mate for life and the hen lays its eggs in a large mound within a large distinctive ring of leaf litter, bark and twigs. The pair"s territorial "patch" which is about 25m in diameter is maintained year-round by the cock.

Rock-hoppers and bush-walkers will be in their element on the slopes of Mt Korong on the south-eastern side of Wedderburn.
