Tucked into the junction of the Ovens and Buckland rivers, Porepunkah is a great base for exploring Victoria's alps and sampling the bountiful local produce and wines of the High Country.

Pretty Porepunkah is a welcome stop along the popular Murray to Mountains Rail Trail. The renowned trail takes in the Ovens River Valley as it makes its way through the townships of Wangaratta, Beechworth, Myrtleford, Porepunkah and Bright, Rutherglen, Wahgunyah and Milawa. With a gentle gradient and no traffic to contend with it's perfect for all ages and fitness levels.

The local produce and wine at farm gates and wineries in the surrounding valleys, including Boynton's Feathertop Winery, is worth travelling for. Fill your basket and prepare a locally-sourced feast at any of the self-contained accommodation around Porepunkah. Choose from bush cabins, camping and caravan sites, and B&Bs, many of which are located in peaceful spots with river views.

Porepunkah's waters entice anglers, with trout and spiny freshwater crayfish in abundance. Relax at riverside picnic areas and take a dip at river swimming spots.

For something more adventurous, head to the Porepunkah airfield for powered hang-gliding, microlighting, ultralight flying and scenic light aircraft flights. Base yourself in Porepunkah for winter adventures in Victoria's ski resorts.

Porepunkah is approximately 320 kilometres from Melbourne, or around three hours and 25 minutes by car along the Hume Freeway and the Great Alpine Road.

7 Peaks Run

Test and build your stamina on a series of 21 colour-coded runs covering more than 200 kilometres through the 7 Peaks of Victoria - Mt Baw Baw, Mount Buffalo, Mt Buller, Dinner Plain, Falls Creek, Hotham and Lake Mountain, with a trail to suit every level of fitness and experience.

Weave your way through Snow Gum forests and towering stands of Mountain Ash, duck between a jumble of granite boulders and sweep past vibrant carpets of wildflowers.

The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail is the perfect way to discover the diverse and ever-changing landscape of North East Victoria - from natural bushland to verdant farmland, delightfully unexpected hidden valleys and some of Australia's most spectacular mountain ranges.

Mount Buffalo National Park


Mount Buffalo National Park has sheer cliffs, imposing granite tors, tumbling waterfalls, snow gums and stunning wildflowers. The park features over 90km of walking tracks, panoramic scenery, waterfalls and scope for adventurous pursuits such as rock climbing and hang-gliding.

Mount Buffalo is an all-seasons playground. In summer, wildflowers are plentiful and the park is a cool retreat from the heat of the lowlands. Take in superb 360-degree views from the summit of the Horn and the delightful Gorge Heritage Walk. Enjoy picnics, canoeing and camping at Lake Catani in the summer months.

In winter the park is ideal for cross-country skiing with its gentle undulating landscape, spectacular sub-alpine environment and the convenience of over 14km of marked ski trails. The park offers safe and accessible toboganning and snow play areas, providing great fun for the whole family.

Come and enjoy the beautiful setting at Ringer Reef with live music and picnic in the vineyard on Saturday afternoon.

From 12:00pm onwards, guests are welcome to bring their own chairs, rugs, balls and games, and sit out on the terrace and lawn to enjoy the tunes, wine and views.

Music from 1:00 until 4:00pm. Local act Dean Haitani playing his smooth bluesy acoustic tunes.

This is a free event. With local produce nibbles and Annie's seasonal platters in the Cellar Door, you are sure to have a ball relaxing or grooving on the lawn. No BYO alcohol.

Brighter Days Festival


Bikes, cars, live music and community generosity come together in Bright, North East Victoria on the March Labour Day Long Weekend for the fifth annual Brighter Days Festival.

The Festival is a free event organised by the Brighter Days Foundation to raise funds for two children's charities, the DEBRA Foundation (Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association) and SUDC (Sudden Unexplained Death In Childhood).

The weekend will feature free live entertainment as well as children's entertainment, a show and shine and the Harley Davidson raffle. These are just some of the events that generate funding and awareness for these two important children's charities.

A fun event for all. Come along and support this fantastic organisation, it's all about the kids.

By following the Make it, Bake it, Grow it ethos, the Bright Monthly Markets strive to showcase the best local produce and product going around. The market has been operating under this new direction since September 2010 and has grown to include over 50 local stall holders.

Held on the third Saturday of each month in Howitt Park, the market also provides live entertainment and children's activities all contributing to a vibrant atmosphere for local members of the community and visitors alike.
