Swanpool

Just a few kilometres upstream from historic Benalla, the picturesque village of Swanpool is set alongside Broken River in the green and pleasant hills where Ned Kelly and his gang once roamed.

Centrepoint of the town is an old-time cinema whose proprietor keeps film buffs on their toes with a program that combines the latest films with timeless classics of the silver screen.

A 20km drive south takes you to stunning Lake Nillacootie. The grassy shores of this beautiful little lake attract both native birds and picnickers, while the locals have their favourite swimming and fishing holes. And don't be surprised if you see a set of sails glinting in the sunset. A bunch of land-locked sailors have formed a yachting club on the lake.

Ten kilometres south of Swanpool, Ian and Angels Preuss host visitors to Pingarra Alpacas. Pinjarra specialises in rearing and raising suri, a rare breed of alpaca whose fleece is described as "a curtain of silk." The property also supports a diverse range of native animals and birds.

Swanpool: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Swanpool Cinema

Kevin Smith retired from the SEC in 1989 to start Swanpool Cinema in October 1991. He met Shirley Swallow, his wife to be, at a film festival in Rosebud and together they ran the cinema as a private business for 20 years, retiring at the end of 2011 on New Year's Eve.

Since that time the Cinema has been a community cinema, completely run with volunteer labour. A team of volunteers run the candy bar, the ticket box, projection and all the admin functions.

So for over 24 years now Swanpool Cinema has been screening the best of art house and quality movies, usually as a double feature on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Matinees, bus groups, fundraisers and private functions are also promoted. The Cinema can shape an audio-visual event to your requirements.

In 2013 the visual and sound systems were upgraded to D Cinema digital to provide an excellent film experience. A new motorised screen was also installed. The old projectors were retained though, so the old classics can still be run.
