WGAC Exhibition: Read It and Weep - Anita George

Read it and weep embodies emotion. Words create a reaction in us; love, despair, hopelessness, joy, anger, questions and answers.

There once were marks that became symbols that became words, which are now moving back to symbols, marks.

This body of work moves away from paper and traditional pens, back to marks, wood, skins, fibres. Using my calligraphic experience I am drawing from the past, thrusting it into the present. Cans, brushes, feathers, paint on MDF, on silk, or cottons will be melded together by letters. Simplicity of mark, overlaid with tradition and my love of all letter forms, make this a very unusual experience.

West Gippsland Dance Festival

The West Gippsland Dance Festival has run successfully for the past 25 years.

In that time, it has grown from being a small regional festival to a highly regarded, major amateur dance competition.

Held annually at the West Gippsland Arts Centre, Warragul, the festival is conducted in September over 10 consecutive days for approximately 12 hours per day.

Age groups range from under six to 17 and over. Sections cover classical, jazz, character, song and dance, tap, national, neo-classical, contemporary and hip hop. Dancers can compete in solos, duos, trios, improvisations, troupes as well as championship sections.

Due to the location and magnificent venue, entries are recieved from all over Victoria, but primarily the Melbourne metropolitan area, east, south and west Gippsland. The festival averages 2,500 entries each year from approximately 30 dance schools.

Warragul is situated in west Gippsland, an easy one hour drive from Melbourne. A number of attractive gardens and parks are located in Warragul, with the most scenic being Civic Park featuring a large lake, rotunda, picnic shelters, playground, walking tracks and a waterfall. Overlooking the park are the Civic offices and the West Gippsland Arts Centre.
