State Coal Mine

The State Coal Mine offers a journey back in time to discover what life working in a coal mine was like in the 1900s. Venture underground through the dark network of tunnels to get hands-on at the coal face and learn how Victoria's hard working men extracted the black gold.

Only 90 minutes from Melbourne, the State Coal Mine is the only historic coal mine experience in the Southern Hemisphere, offering interactive fun and interest for the whole family both above and below ground.

Rising from its beginnings as a make shift 'Tent Town', Wonthaggi quickly grew to the thriving town we know today. Operating from 1909 to 1968, the State Coal Mine produced almost 17 million tonnes of coal for Victoria's industries and railways.

Please note, conditions can change in parks for many reasons. For the latest information on changes to local conditions, please visit the relevant park page on the Parks Victoria website.

True Colours - an exhibition by Gayle Rodgers

Gayle responds to colours of nature, an autumn leaf, a dry gum leaf, rocks, the ocean, things that have a simple presence. She is very conscious of the environment and the impact people have on it, and her art is often a response to those concerns.

Her paintings are created in an abstract style with a fluid, marbling of colours and shapes depicting movement. She adds simple white bird forms to represent the fragility of our bird life.

Her glass collages are an ongoing experiment with colours, decals and shards of glass. She rearranges them into a pleasing ensemble, focusing on the spontaneity of the medium and the serendipity created as one colour blends into another.

Colour is the main influential back ground to all her works.
