Harmers Haven: Where To Go / Sightseeing

State Coal Mine

The State Coal Mine offers a journey back in time to discover what life working in a coal mine was like in the 1900s. Venture underground through the dark network of tunnels to get hands-on at the coal face and learn how Victoria's hard working men extracted the black gold.

Only 90 minutes from Melbourne, the State Coal Mine is the only historic coal mine experience in the Southern Hemisphere, offering interactive fun and interest for the whole family both above and below ground.

Rising from its beginnings as a make shift 'Tent Town', Wonthaggi quickly grew to the thriving town we know today. Operating from 1909 to 1968, the State Coal Mine produced almost 17 million tonnes of coal for Victoria's industries and railways.

Free entry to all above ground facilities includes the new State Coal Mine Visitor Centre with cafe, theatrette and shop, the museum, heritage trail, historic buildings and sheltered barbecue area.

Please note, conditions can change in parks for many reasons. For the latest information on changes to local conditions, please visit the relevant park page on the Parks Victoria website.

Please be bushfire ready in the great outdoors. Refer to the Bushfire Safety section on the Parks Victoria website for tips on how to stay safe.

Bunurong Marine and Coastal Park

Located about six kilometres south-west of Inverloch in South Gippsland, this proposed park covers 2100 hectares and about 5 kilometres of coastline. This coastline is beautiful, full of striking rock formations, attractive sandy coves, rugged sandstone cliffs, dunes and prominent headlands.

The coastal waters protect a remarkable range of habitats including intertidal reefs, subtidal rocky reefs, algal gardens and seagrass beds. The waters here are cool, akin to Victoria's central and western coasts, however they are relatively protected from south-westerly swells due to the location of far away King Island.

The marine life of the region is considered special due to the unusual set of environmental conditions. The intertidal sandstone reefs of the area boast the highest recorded diversity of intertidal and subtidal invertebrates in eastern Victoria. The range of seaweed species is also large and includes greens, blue-greens, browns and encrusting, coralline reds.

Seagrass meadows and sandy bays are also important habitats within the area. The diversity of habitats supports many marine animals including seastars, featherstars, crabs, snails, Port Jackson Sharks and up to 87 species of fish. If you are lucky you may see Humpback Whales, Southern Right Whales or Subantarctic Fur Seals.

Bonsai Island

Bonsai Island has everything for the bonsai enthusiast, including an outdoor display area with quality established bonsai styled by the proprietors. And starter material from tubestock to advanced pre-bonsai and everything in between.

There are Bonsai for sale, plus supplies and equipment, a range of Japanese and Chinese pots, hand-made Australian pots, plenty of specialty tools and styling wire for training your trees, bonsai books for inspiration. Bonsai Island offers tuition, too. Extensive range of conifers, Australian natives, broadleaved evergreens, deciduous, flowering and fruiting examples in all bonsai styles.

The Art of Bonsai features trees at their seasonal peak, so any time of year is a great time to visit. Potting, re-styling, bonsai boarding and advisory services available.

Bonsai plants are grown in shallow containers, resembling scale-models of mature trees in nature. Bonsai need sunlight, air movement, water, nutrients and a substrate in which to grow. The art of involves styling, training and pruning a living tree to the shape you want, then matching it to a complementary container to create the desired overall effect. Bonsai Island teaches that Bonsai is not about the age of the tree, per se, it is about the artistry and beauty of the design.
