Gippsland Art Gallery

The Gippsland Art Gallery was established in 1965 as the Sale Regional Arts Centre. The Gallery was the first public art venue to open east of Melbourne. A Victorian State Government Grant of ?40,000 enabled construction of the Gallery, which was subsequently run by a Committee of Management. The Gallery was staffed entirely by volunteers until its first Director, Gwen Webb OAM, was appointed in 1976. It continued to operate as a community gallery until 1994, when it came under the management of the newly formed Wellington Shire Council. The Gallery relocated into the Port of Sale Civic Centre, where it reopened in 1995.

In July 2015 the Gallery moved next door to the Port of Sale Business Centre, 64-66 Foster Street, Sale as a temporary measure while the old Port of Sale Civic Centre is redeveloped.

The Gippsland Art Gallery collection currently consists of approximately 1,330 objects, including but not limited to painting, sculpture, works on paper (drawings and prints), photographs, textiles, metalwork, woodwork, and indigenous and tribal art.

Sale Powder Magazine

Colonial Governments in Victoria built Powder Magazines to provide safe conditions for the storage of explosive powder which was used by the gold mining industry.

Built in 1864-65, the Sale Powder Magazine served the needs of North and East Gippsland. The Sale Powder Magazine has massive walls and buttresses and barrel vaulting in the ceiling. To reduce the chance of an accidental explosion, timber dowels were used to fix the flooring.

Barrack like in appearance, the building is almost encircled by the watercourse of Flooding Creek, historically giving it a buffer from bushfires. The Magazine became private property around 1925 and in 1995 it was rediscovered through a heritage study conducted by the former City of Sale having been used as a private residence for many years.

The property is now owned by the Wellington Shire Council, who utilised the services of a heritage architect to produce a schedule of work for its restoration. It is managed by a Committee of Management responsible to the Sale Historical Society.

Arj Barker: Organic (Wellington Entertainment Centre)

'As always, I start with the finest free-range topics, nurture them until they're brimming with wholesome hilarity, and ready for the tellin'. Remember, my cruelty-free jokes are always tested on animals, and 100% goat-approved by the time you hear them. That's quality you can trust.'

*May contain traces of nuts

Arj Barker is arguably Australia's favourite American comedian. In recent years, he has spent more time in our country than his own and has come to understand our culture perhaps better than we understand it ourselves. His stand-up is both insightful and pointed, like a mind-reading thumb tack, if there was one of those.
