Wonthaggi

Built on the industry of 'black gold', these days Wonthaggi offers a glimpse into Victoria's mining past as well as a host of outdoor activities and sweeping coastal views.

Wonthaggi was home to Victoria's only winnable underground black coal, used by the Victorian Government in response to the disastrous New South Wales coal strikes at the turn of the twentieth century.

Although Wonthaggi's State Coal Mine has retired from duty, there's still plenty to see and do. The mine's above-ground heritage features are open to the public, with historic buildings, interpretive displays, a picnic area and kiosk. The heritage walk around the mine site reveals a town that was controlled by the mine whistle, which is still heard at noon every day.

Wonthaggi is also the starting point for the amazing 16-kilometre Bass Coast Rail Trail, Victoria's only coastal rail trail. This trail is best known for the trestle bridge at Kilcunda, which has a surf beach as its backdrop.

Keep your walking shoes on and explore the Wonthaggi Wetlands, the North School Wild Flowers Reserve, and the Old Rescue Station - all easy short walks with wheelchair access.

Wonthaggi is home to a variety of shops, eateries, supermarkets and accommodation. The local cinema shows the latest movies and local clubs provide meals, gaming facilities, entertainment, live bands and shows. The beach at Cape Paterson is an inviting place to dive in a on a hot day.

Wonthaggi is approximately 135 kilometres from Melbourne, or an hour and 40 minutes along the M1, the South Gippsland Highway and the Bass Highway.

State Coal Mine

The State Coal Mine offers a journey back in time to discover what life working in a coal mine was like in the 1900s. Venture underground through the dark network of tunnels to get hands-on at the coal face and learn how Victoria's hard working men extracted the black gold.

Only 90 minutes from Melbourne, the State Coal Mine is the only historic coal mine experience in the Southern Hemisphere, offering interactive fun and interest for the whole family both above and below ground.

Rising from its beginnings as a make shift 'Tent Town', Wonthaggi quickly grew to the thriving town we know today. Operating from 1909 to 1968, the State Coal Mine produced almost 17 million tonnes of coal for Victoria's industries and railways.

Please note, conditions can change in parks for many reasons. For the latest information on changes to local conditions, please visit the relevant park page on the Parks Victoria website.

Bunurong Marine and Coastal Park

Located about six kilometres south-west of Inverloch in South Gippsland, this proposed park covers 2100 hectares and about five kilometres of coastline. This coastline is beautiful, full of striking rock formations, attractive sandy coves, rugged sandstone cliffs, dunes and prominent headlands.

The coastal waters protect a remarkable range of habitats including intertidal reefs, subtidal rocky reefs, algal gardens and seagrass beds. The waters here are cool, akin to Victoria's central and western coasts, however they are relatively protected from south-westerly swells due to the location of far away King Island.

The marine life of the region is considered special due to the unusual set of environmental conditions. The intertidal sandstone reefs of the area boast the highest recorded diversity of intertidal and subtidal invertebrates in eastern Victoria. The range of seaweed species is also large and includes greens, blue-greens, browns and encrusting, coralline reds.

Seagrass meadows and sandy bays are also important habitats within the area. The diversity of habitats supports many marine animals including seastars, featherstars, crabs, snails, Port Jackson Sharks and up to 87 species of fish. If you are lucky you may see Humpback Whales, Southern Right Whales or Sub antarctic Fur Seals.
