WA Herbarium

The Western Australian (WA) Herbarium is responsible for the scientific description and documentation of Western Australia's botanical species diversity. It maintains a collection of over 740,000 plant specimens that voucher species diversity and distribution throughout the State. Each year they add a further twelve thousand specimens to the already extensive flora collection.

Learn about the origins of many native Western Australian and overseas plants, which are all catalogued, mounted onto sheets of paper or placed in special packets for storage. The astounding floral collection is estimated to be worth over AUD15 million. Use the Herbarium's website to further investigate the State's amazing flora - it contains maps and images for most of the 12,000 species occurring in Western Australia.

Visitors can bring specimens of plants for identification in the Community Reference Herbarium. It is advisable to call in advance if you are taking in a plant, as plants will need to be treated for pests to ensure the protection of this extensive collection. The WA Herbarium is located at the southern end of the main DEC campus just off Hayman Road in Kensington, a ten minute drive south of Perth.

Canning River

The Canning River brings the serenity of the bush to the buzzing inner suburbs of Perth city.

It flows all the way from the Perth Hills, through Cannington, Thornlie, Riverton, Shelley, Rossmoyne and Mount Pleasant, to meet the Swan River in the city, and there are plenty of riverside parks, picnic areas, cafes and places to launch your craft along its path.

One of the most popular spots to enjoy its tranquillity is the Canning River Regional Park, an easy 20-minute drive from Perth city. Walk or cycle the network of paths through diverse natural habitats, from woodlands to wetlands, keeping an eye out for the variety of birds and wildlife that call the Canning home.

Jump in a canoe or kayak at one of the designated launching facilities and follow the Canning Canoe Trail for a relaxing float down the river - it's the best way to experience the river's spectacular views.

Or throw in a line and try your luck at hooking a black bream, herring, skippy, flathead or mulloway.
