The southern Perth suburb of Manning, about seven kilometres from the city centre, has the Canning River, which makes a right hand turn here, as its southern and western boundaries. The Kwinana Freeway, which follows the river for quite a way as it makes its way into Perth's CBD, gives easy accessibility to the city, and the Canning Highway, which also dissects Manning, provides a direct route to Fremantle, about 15km away. Manning is a pleasant, solid suburb with many properties enjoying views of the Canning River. There's an attractive little beach at Como, just up the road, where the Canning River meets the Swan River at Melville Water. Take a right off the freeway on the way back into the city, just a couple of kilometres from the heart of Manning, and you'll find the Perth Zoo - a surprising treat, smack in the middle of some of the best real estate in Perth. Among the zoo's most popular residents are the numbats. Once widespread across southern Australia, this marsupial has become extinct throughout most of its range, surviving in the wild only in small patches of forest in WA's south-west.
