Wellard: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Rockingham Golf Club

The Rockingham Golf Club, located in a magnificent bush land setting, offers a golf course as natural as can be achieved in the metropolitan area, with open bush lands, generous fairways lined by Grass Trees, towering old Tuart Trees and prolific wildlife (you might have to wait for your next shot while the Kangaroos cross), the course can be challenging. A true benefit of the course is that other players are often out of view, enhancing the sensation that you are alone in the wilderness.

Just 45 minutes south of Perth, near the coastal town of Rockingham Golf Course promises a unique experience, 'Where Dreams are made or broken!'

Shoalwater Islands Marine Park

Pristine Islands, reefs and ship wrecks make for excellent diving, snorkelling and wildlife watching in the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. At Penguin Island, Little Penguins breed in the burrows - watch them being fed at the interactive centre. The island is also home to breeding colonies of silver gulls, fairy terns, bridled terns and Caspian terns.

The reefs surrounding the islands provide good snorkelling and diving and abound in marine life including sea stars, urchins and molluscs as well as a number of fish species. Take to the water and you'll probably run into a pod of bottlenose dolphins which are extremely common in the marine park. You can swim with dolphins on tours which operate regularly.

Seal Island is home to a colony of rare Australian sea lions which can often be seen fishing and swimming in nearby waters.

Shoalwater Islands Marine Park is also home to the Saxon Ranger, a 400 tonne former fishing vessel - the first purpose sunk dive wreck in the Perth metropolitan area. Dive permits are required.

Shoalwater Islands Marine Park is accessible from Rockingham which is less than an hour's drive south of Perth. Please note that costs may apply for some activities.

Penguin Island

Located 45 minutes south of Perth and a five minute ferry ride across Shoalwater Bay, Penguin Island is one of Australia's premier nature based tourism destinations. The star attraction is the little penguin - the smallest species in the world. Visitors can get up close to the penguins at the Discovery Centre where rangers host three daily penguin feedings (costs may apply). This is your best opportunity to see these creatures as they're shy and spend most daylight hours feeding at sea or hidden in their burrows.

Penguin Island lies in the heart of the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park which abounds with wildlife including dolphins, sea lions, stingrays, pelicans and seabirds. Underwater there are reefs and sea-grass meadows for snorkelers to enjoy. On the island, nature lovers can explore boardwalks and lookouts. Enjoy a picnic area overlooking a beach - perfect for children to have a swim while parents relax.

Penguin Island closes from early June to 14 September each year for the little penguin nesting season.

Rockingham Wild Encounters operates an hourly ferry service to Penguin Island from 15 September to early June (costs apply). They also offer a range of cruises to explore more of the marine park.

Penguin Island Boardwalks and Walk Trail

Penguin Island is a magnet for nature lovers and is home to the largest colony of Little Penguins. The moderate 1.5 kilometre loop trail starts at the Penguin Experience Island Discovery Centre and allows walkers to experience close encounters with the flora and fauna.

Take the booklet Discovering Penguin Island and Shoalwater Islands Marine Park on your walk with you. It features a mud map and other information to help you discover and learn about the plants and animals of the island. It's available from the Discovery Centre and proceeds go back into management of the island.

Commentaries and feeding of the little penguins in the Discovery Centre occurs at 10:30am, 12:30pm and 2:30pm. The Top Trail has a wheelchair accessible boardwalk which provides access between the jetty, picnic area, toilets, the Discovery Centre and to the northern lookout.

Whilst on the island it's important to stick to the walk trails and demarcated beaches only as the island is a bird sanctuary.

The island is only open during the day and the ferry operates from mid-September to early June departing hourly between 9am and 3pm and returning at your leisure, hourly between 10am and 4pm.
