Port Vila

Port Vila is the capital of Vanuatu and is located on the island of Efate. Filled with Hotels, fine restaurants, shops and markets. Port Vila is well known for it’s natural beauty and is regarded as a very safe city.

Port Vila: Activities

Scuba diving, fishing or just strolling on the beach are all acceptable activities in the Vanuatu capital. If the mood strikes you, walk to the top of Klems Hill, stopping off for a dip in freshwater pools along the way.

Port Vila: Shopping

The shopping strip is situated on the main road, Lini Highway, down town. There are actually two ‘main roads’ both one way in opposite directions. Vila has a number of duty free stores, souvenir outlets, several supermarkets and a lot of Chinese stores filled with really interesting stuff.

Port Vila: Eating Out

While the restaurants within the larger resorts cater for all tastes and have both French and Melanesian influences, no visit to Port Vila is complete without sampling some of the restaurant food on offer around town.

Port Vila: Night Life

‘Entertainment’ means different things to different people. For pre dinner drinks there’s the Port Vila Pub, the Anchor Inn, Club Vanuatu, the Waterfront Bar and Grill, l’Houstalet, the bar at Café du Village, Chantilly’s, Shooters or Voodoo Bar. The resorts all have bars and there are occasional themed nights (Melanesian feasts, trivia nights around the pool etc).

Port Vila: Getting Around

Driving is on the right-hand side of the road, the same as the USA and Europe. Taxis (small cars with a 'T' before the number plate) are plentiful and are all metered although some may agree to a fixed rate. It is quite common for a driver to offer passengers a comparable rate to the bus.

Mini buses offer a frequent though not timetabled service. Look for the letter 'B' next to the front license plate and simply flag one down and tell the driver where you want to go.

You can hail from anywhere with the raise of a hand or an eyebrow and you may get the scenic route, depending on the other travelers'' destinations.
