Coonabarabran is in Central NSW and is located within two hours drive of the regional cities of Dubbo and Tamworth. It is located at the junction of the Newell and Oxley Highways, midway between Melbourne and Brisbane.

Known as the 'Astronomy Capital of Australia', Coonabarabran is the gateway to Warrumbungle National Park.

Coonabarabran has one of the darkest skies in Australia and is the home of Australia's largest optical astronomy research facility, Siding Spring Observatory. The area around Coonabarabran is ideal for stargazing with high altitude, low humidity, a non-turbulent atmosphere for viewing clarity, clean air and an average of 70 per cent clear night skies.

A dump site is available for free usage 24 hours in Coonabarabran, on Essex Street adjacent to Neilson Park.

Coonabarabran is located in the Warrumbungle Shire region.

Goanna Tracks Motocross and Enduro Complex


Goanna Tracks Motocross and Enduro Complex has adrenaline pumping tracks and engines roaring. Enjoy all styles of Motocross, Enduro, Endurocross, ATVs and Trials.

The complex caters for all riders - from junior and beginner riders through to experienced riders - from the young to the young at heart. All tracks are built to national standards.

Goanna Tracks is located between Bugaldie and Coonabarabran on Kurrajong Road.

Camping is also available, please contact direct for further information. Facilities include showers, toilets and camp kitchen. Fees apply. No pets allowed.

Coona Astro Ventures


Coona Astro Ventures sessions is facilitated by a qualified, local, University of Southern Queensland astronomer. Shows are held in a central town location, no travel necessary. Family friendly show providing a hands-on telescope experience. Daytime solar viewing available on request. Be sure to dress in warm clothing as the nights are cold.

Woodpecker Gun


The Woodpecker Gun is a War Memorial to those who served in the Second World War. The Japanese Machine Gun, which is at the front of the Memorial Swimming Pool, adjacent to the Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre, was captured on August 3, 1945 during combat in New Guinea and is a free attraction to visit.

There is an information board at the gun site with details of the capture and a listing of the Coonabarabran men and women who served in World War Two and the Vietnam War.

After visiting this attraction, walk just 200 metres south to visit the Coonabarabran Visitor Centre where you can collect information on other attractions throughout the Warrumbungle Region. This is a 24 hour viewing place.

Australian Museum Diprotodon Exhibition


The Australian Museum Diprotodon Exhibition is housed at the Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre, on the Newell Highway, at the southern end of town.

The exhibition displays the skeleton and skull of a Diprotodon, the largest marsupial ever to have lived. It is often likened to a giant sized wombat. The remains of the Diprotodon were found in the creek bed of Cox's Creek near Tambar Springs in 1979. The exhibition also provides information on other mega fauna that were believed to have existed at around the same time.

Free guided tours of the display are available for groups with advance notice. Please call the Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre for more information.

There is also an area located in the Museum which shows art work from local artists, as well as an Aboriginal Keeping Place.

Crystal Kingdom


Crystal Kingdom is the home of one of the world's most unique mineral collections, the "Minerals of the Warrumbungles".

See the world's rarest and most colourful Zeolite Crystals and learn about how the Coonabarabran area was once home to not one, but two volcanoes. Experienced staff are available to explain the fascinating origin of these extinct local volcanoes.

More than 500 examples of local minerals and fossils are on display. Not only are these treasures of the earth on show, their origin and use is explained and fact sheets are available.

The educational exhibition displays a range of fossils from 300 million years ago to the recent age of the Australian Megafauna.

Jewellery lovers and collectors will love browsing through the 'Crystal Shop'. Here you will find quality gemstone jewellery, crystals and fossils. You can also get creative with 'Rosie's Beads' and design your own unique piece of jewellery.

Worlds Largest Virtual Solar System Drive


Launch into Coonabarabran, Central NSW, on the Worlds Largest Virtual Solar System Drive and explore the planets as it you were hurtling through space. Journey through the Solar System and picturesque countryside on one or all of the five drives that lead to Australia's largest optical astronomy centre, Siding Spring Observatory which is one of the country's largest centre for optical astronomy research and learn, fascinating facts about the universe along the way.

The colourful three-dimensional planets on the billboards are scaled in size relative to the huge observatory dome and the location of the billboards are scaled in distance, just as you'd find the planets in outer space - only 38 million times smaller!

The Worlds Largest Virtual Solar System Drive is a daytime experience. Visitors are encouraged to stop at each planet in a safe manner, taking care when pulling off and back onto the roadway.

Bunny Bazaar


Held every year on Easter Saturday, the Bunny Bazaar is a morning of fun and entertainment for the whole family. The main street is closed to traffic from 8am to 1pm and locals and visitors alike can meander the street, enjoying the many street stalls, musical entertainment and great shopping specials. There's a jumping castle for the kid's entertainment and plenty of food stalls to tempt the tastebuds.

Staff and local volunteers at the Coonabarabran Visitor Information Centre will help to make your visit to Warrumbungle Region more enjoyable and will provide you with advice on what to do, where to stay, where to eat and what's happening in the shire; there's also great public amenities, park-like gardens and free barbecues too.
The Centre is a short walk from the central business district with plenty of parking.

While at the Centre, check out the Australian Museum Megafauna and skeleton of the Diprotodon, guided tours for pre-booked groups and The Keeping Place and ArtSpace.
There's a great range of gifts and souvenirs, maps and books.
