Maclean Stone Cottage and Bicentennial Museum

The Maclean Bicentennial Museum is one of very few purpose-built museums in rural Australia. The excellent design enables visitors to easily understand and enjoy the range of special displays.

There are delightful replicas of an early school room and an early hospital ward plus many regularly changing exhibitions. The museum offers a very interesting insight into early Australian lifestyles and the experience extends well beyond the boundaries of the Clarence River.

The Stone Cottage, in the same grounds, was built by Johann George Schaefer after 1879 using sandstone quarried from the site. It became the local museum in 1973 and since the opening of its big brother in 1988 it has been returned to a "living history" replica of a typical home from the turn of the century. It contains many working models.

These talented artists fill the gallery with a wide variety of paintings, quilts, hangings, jewellery, cards, glasswork, mirrors, leatherwork, photography, folk art, toys, fibre arts, clothing, woodwork, pottery, porcelain, photography and souvenirs. Pieces of art that make wonderful gifts, and are both functional and decorative.

Displays change regularly with a different featured artist each month. There is a large, unique range of unusual gifts and souvenirs.

Located in the Ferry Park Complex is also the Clarence Coast Visitor Information Centre, together with a cafe with veranda seating overlooking the river.

Maclean Scottish Shop

The Maclean Scottish Shop has a dual purpose: Supplying tourist information, as well as advice, for the immediate area and the greater Maclean surrounds. They sell Scottish memorabilia, in addition to promoting Maclean, as the Scottish Town in Australia.

The friendly staff are quite knowledgeable about all things Maclean and can provide an insight into the history of the area, as well. One feature that they are quite proud of is the power poles which have been named and painted in a variety of clan tartans.

All this information and more can be gleaned from the Scottish Shop volunteers during opening hours.
