Further down the coastline, Byron Bay is a unique seaside village with a relaxed, alternative lifestyle and clean, undeveloped beaches. The region has transformed into a popular beachside retreat yet still maintains the informal culture it has become famous for.

Around ten minutes drive north of Byron Bay is Brunswick Heads. Renowned for its emphasis on water sports including surfing and fishing, the coastal town has a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.

Further south is Lennox Head, a quiet seaside village nestled between Ballina and Byron Bay. Lennox Head is a popular choice for surfers with its fantastic surf beaches, however fishing and simply relaxing are also favourite pastimes.

Take a 20 minute scenic drive from Byron Bay and you will arrive in Ballina. With pristine white sand beaches, great fishing and surfing as well as easy access to the scenic countryside, Ballina is the ideal location for a relaxed holiday.

Whether you're a toddler dipping your toes in for the first time, or a world-class surfer, with over 32 kilometres of coastline to choose from, it's easy to find the ideal swimming or surfing spot in Ballina.

There are calm sandy beaches and shoals on the banks of the Richmond River, rising swells perfect for a body bash at one of the many beaches and there are often perfect barrels rolling of North Wall and the world famous right hand break at Lennox Point.

There are beaches that allow four wheel drive vehicle access and some that allow dogs and horses. Local operators offer horse riding on isolated beaches, both north and south of Ballina. It's the stuff that postcards are made of.

Creative Artisans Gallery

Creative Artisans Gallery is all original work with most of the items such as the jewellery, woodwork and silk, being 'one-off' designs.

The gallery aims to showcase original creations and artwork from local artists and artisans. It is owned and managed by local women who have lived and worked in the shire for many years.

Purchasing artwork from the gallery ensures an income for the artisans, and local suppliers and creates jobs within the community. There are so many very talented people who do not have the opportunity to have their work presented for sale on an ongoing basis - not just in exhibitions that may last from a couple of days to a month.

The Northern Rivers Community Gallery (NRCG) is privileged to be housed in the historic former Ballina Municipal Council Chambers. Built in 1927, Ballina Shire Council renovated this building in 2007 to the highest standard in lighting, climate control and security. The building now provides an exceptional space for patrons to enjoy exhibitions and other public programs.

As a community gallery, distinct from a regional or commercial artistic institution, the NRCG is driven by the principles of access, equity and participation for local artists and local audiences, while striving for the highest standards of programming.

Sea Silks Gallery

This beautiful gallery is located in the heart of Ballina under the Ramada Hotel, and overlooking the Richmond River. The gallery is a collective of the finest local silk and glass artists living in the beautiful region of Northern NSW. Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum

Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum is home to a stunning collection of history and memorabilia. These include the last remaining Las Balsas expedition raft which travelled from Ecuador to Australia forty years ago, the largest collection of ship models in Australia, rare and unique shipwreck items, and the fascinating history of the Port of Ballina.

The biggest and best Lego Fan Expo is coming to Ballina for the very first time in January 2019 for the inaugural Ballina Brick Event. The Ballina Brick Event is set to showcase amazing dioramas, custom Lego creations from many talented local brick builders who will be exhibiting creations built entirely from Lego.

The Ballina Brick Event is a Lego fan event for all ages and will be one of the biggest yet showcasing over 30 different exhibits all made from Lego bricks.

Ballina Bowls Summerland Series

Summerland Series is a prestigious bowls series attracting players from interstate, New Zealand and other overseas countries. There will be approximately 300 bowlers who participate in the event, as well as spectators in excess of 300. Participants will be competing for AUD24,500 in prize money.

The event is divided into Summerland Singles and Summerland Pairs. The Pairs tournament will run over three days, with three days break and then the Singles tournament runs a further four days. Finals are held the day after the Singles tournament.
