Bradmans Birthplace Museum Cootamundra

Granny Scholz, the mid-wife who delivered "The greatest batsman the world has ever known" Sir Donald Bradman on 27 August 1908, operated a small private hospital in the front room of the building at 89 Adams Street.

The birthplace has been restored by Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council. Sir Donald Bradman is an Australian sporting hero and his achievements on the cricket field from 1928 to 1948 are still among the world's best. He's the only Australian ever knighted for services to cricket.

Cricket memorabilia on Sir Don and local Cootamundra teams are on display. Bradman lived at Yeo Yeo, between Cootamundra and Stockinbingal for the first few years of his life. Sir Donalds' grandparents are buried in Cootamundra Cemetery, Charles died in 1907 and Elizabeth in 1924.

Milestones Sculptures in Cootamundra

The sculptures are in two locations - in Mackay Park at Wallendbeen and in Parker Street next to the Catholic School in Cootamundra. These fibre optic lit sculptures were opened in 1997 by the then Governor General and are very beautiful and significant.

These Milestones Sculptures pay tribute to the significance of the wheat industry in the Cootamundra and Wallendbeen areas.

It is an area that has seen some of the nation's finest high quality award winning wheat crops.

The project grew out of a major community achievement that transformed the site using the "milestone" concept. The concept, which refers to the previous mile posts that were used to mark out distances between small villages and country towns in earlier days.

The sculptures are made from cast concrete and use patterns that represent wheat stalks cut from compressed fibrous cement, painted in the soft colour of wheat.

Captains Walk

Unique to Cootamundra, the Captains Walk features 42 bronze sculptures of Australian Test Cricket Captains, along with Unaarrimim the leading Aboriginal player in the first Australian cricket team to tour England in 1868.

Cootamundra has strong connections with two Australian test cricket captains, being the birthplace of Sir Donald Bradman and a former home of Bill Murdoch. Their careers led to a special interest in cricket among the people of Cootamundra, which still prevails, with Cootamundra boasting nine cricket ovals with three turf wickets.
