Hermits Caves and Lookout

Hermits Cave is situated to the left and down a path below the former Sir Dudley de Chair's Lookout - now named the Hermits Cave Lookout.

The cave was once the home of Valerio Riccetti, a miner from Broken Hill. After being jilted, he left Broken Hill and lived the life of a hermit in his cave on Scenic Hill.

During World War II, he was interned and after his release he returned to the cave. He became very ill and sought refuge from one of the local doctors. In return for treatment he tended the doctor's garden.

The hermit again became very ill and the citizens of Griffith collected money and sent him back to his home country in Italy where three months later he died.

Call into the Griffith Visitors Information Centre for a copy of the Hermit's story and Heritage Trail brochure.

Visit Griffith during the annual Spring Fest and you'll enjoy visiting beautiful private gardens and attending workshops with the Special guest.

Eight private gardens are usually open to the public. On the edge of Griffith, these large rambling country gardens feature productive vegetable plots and orchards, ornate structures, secret pathways and white trunked forests. With catering offered at most of the gardens, you can easily stay put for a while and enjoy the cafe garden space.

The daily Garden Tour Bus is a popular way to explore the open gardens, and a lovely day out. With lunch and a visit to four gardens included, be sure to book a seat as places are limited and book quickly. Griffith Spring Fest - Citrus Sculptures

Griffith comes alive with an amazing display of more than 70, larger than life, three dimensional Citrus Sculptures. The Citrus Sculptures line the main street of Griffith, creating a spectacular gateway to the city and are on display for two weeks. The Sculptures are wacky and creative and include a grand piano, a giant guitar, a chook, talking robot and a Cinderella carriage with horses.

The Sculptures are unique to Australia, and are based on the famous lemon sculptures of Menton, France. They are created using 100,000 oranges and rubber bands, and an army of 700 volunteers, young and old. Sculptures are created by schools, service clubs, community groups and multi-national companies - it is a fabulous community event.

The Sculptures are the hero event of the Griffith Spring Fest.
