Hermit's Cave and Lookout

Hermit's Cave is well worth a visit - perched high on the ridge of Scenic Hill, part of the McPherson Ranges, it offers a fabulous view across irrigated farmland to the Binya Hills and Cocoparra National Park in the distance.

The cave was once the home of Valerio Ricetti, a miner from Broken Hill who lived the life of a hermit in his cave on Scenic Hill for many years. A keen gardener, Valerio transformed the rocky escarpment and created dry-stone-walls, paths and stone steps creating access to areas that he called, the Garden, the Chapel and the Main Cave. The walls of the Main Cave feature paintings of small daisies, created by Ricetti. The living areas and stone walls are marked on the storyboard and form part of a signed heritage trail/walk.
Wear sturdy walking shoes as the paths are uneven.

Call into the Griffith Visitor Information Centre for a copy of the Hermit's story and Heritage Trail brochure.

Griffith Pioneer Park Museum

Pioneer Park Museum is on open-air museum set on 11 hectares of natural bush land. With more than 40 original and recreated buildings in the collection, the village gives a great impression of life in the early pioneering days. Cottages, a school, hospital, stables, store, church and Dumosa Inn are well worth exploring. The people of the area were very inventive and their are many inventions in the collection which made life in the early 1900s that little bit easier, such as the carrot washer and mechanical rice harvester.
While at Pioneer Park be sure to also learn the history of the early Italian migrant in the Italian Museum and the creation of the irrigation system in 1912 by visiting the Wine and Water Exhibition and learning about the early winemaking pioneers.

The Italian Museum houses an incredible collection of artifacts from the earliest Italian settlers, from machinery to kitchenware and beautiful handmade garments.

The Park is also the home of the Knitted Garden, a wonderful display of knitted and crochet delights donated by the Natty Knitters.

Griffith Spring Fest - Citrus Sculptures

Griffith comes alive with an amazing display of more than 70, larger than life, three dimensional Citrus Sculptures. The Citrus Sculptures line the main street of Griffith, creating a spectacular gateway to the city and are on display for two weeks. The Sculptures are wacky and creative and include a grand piano, a giant guitar, a chook, talking robot and a Cinderella carriage with horses.

The Sculptures are unique to Australia, and are based on the famous lemon sculptures of Menton, France. They are created using 100,000 oranges and rubber bands, and an army of 700 volunteers, young and old. Sculptures are created by schools, service clubs, community groups and multi-national companies - it is a fabulous community event.

The Sculptures are the hero event of the Griffith Spring Fest.
