Culburra Beach

With terrific swimming, surfing and fishing, you'll discover your own beachside heaven at Culburra.

Culburra Beach, about 22 kilometres south east of Nowra, is the town's main attraction with its long sandy stretches.

Other attractions nearby include Lake Wollumboola, a coastal lake that intermittently opens to the ocean and is a haven for thousands of migratory and local birds and endangered species such as the green and golden bell frog. The lake has special cultural significance for the Jerrinja people and a picnic area is provided with signs interpreting the importance of the lake. When water levels are high, it's used for sailing, wind surfing and water skiing.

At Crookhaven Heads, follow a walking trail to see the historic Crookhaven Heads Lighthouse. Boating, rock fishing and deep-sea charters for marlin and tuna fishing are popular here.

Culburra Surf Beach

Warrain Beach is the surfing beach for the settlement of Culburra. It begins on the south side of Penguin Head and runs to the south for 3.7 kilometres past the usually blocked mouth of Wollumboola Lake to the low rocks at Kinghorn Point. Culburra Surf Beach is great for swimming, surfing and scuba diving.

Car parking is provided at the surf club and by the north side of the lagoon entrance, while in the south a track leads off the Currarong road to the back of Kinghorn Point.

Due to the beach being recognised as a popular surfing destination it is not recommended to take children under the age of seven or children who can't swim. The beach is patrolled during summer.

Crookhaven Heads Lighthouse

The original Crookhaven Heads Lighthouse was constructed of timber in 1882 and located as part of the Shoalhaven Signal Station on the beach 200 metres to the west of the current lighthouse. The new brick lighthouse to the south of the mouth of the Shoalhaven River was commissioned in 1904 and the old wooden lighthouse was immediately demolished.

Aside from the Keepers Cottages at South Solitary Island, this is probably the most endangered lighthouse in New South Wales, which should be of great concern to lighthouse enthusiasts and the community at large.

The lighthouse is located on the south side of the entrance to the Shoalhaven River just east of Nowra.
