Gymea

No matter where you are in the Sutherland Shire, you're never far from a river, a bay or the Pacific Ocean - and plenty of opportunities for boating and fishing.

Gymea is no exception. Its southern reaches are washed by the Hacking River and Port Hacking, while Sylvania Waters, George's River and Botany Bay define Sutherland's northern boundary.

This is a part of Sydney where access to a boat and fishing tackle are as important to family life as a car, a motor-mower or a Hills hoist.

Toss in surf and harbour beaches, national parks and reserves and some of the largest shopping centres in the metropolitan area and you can appreciate that Sutherland and neighbouring municipal areas are totally self-contained. The connection to the rest of Sydney is a bonus.

Gymea is distinguished by the fact that it is one of very few Australian suburbs to have a native plant named in its honour. The Gymea lily (Doryanthes excelsa) is a spectacular, 4m tall plant with long, sword-like leaves surrounding a large bloom. Aborigines are believed to have harvested the blooms and roots of young lilies for food.

Joseph Banks Native Plants Reserve

Joseph Banks Native Plants Reserve is one of only a few specialised gardens in Sydney devoted entirely to Australian native plants.

The reserve covers an area of 2.2 hectares and is crossed by four kilometres of sealed paths. Many plants are labelled and a section has been established to display Aboriginal food and medicinal plants. The vast array of native plants forms a delightfully relaxing garden and a home for many birds and other native fauna.

There's plenty to do while you're there; explore the gardens, enjoy a picnic or barbecue, photograph the flora and fauna, take in the city and water views, and get inspiration for your own garden.
