Proston

Proston, just north of Wondai in the South Burnett, is a major growing area for duboisia - a native tree valued for its pharmaceutical properties.

The Proston Show and Campdraft is held over three days each March. On-site camping and adventure tracks for four-wheel driving enthusiasts are available at Manar Tourist Park on the Boyne River, around an hour from Lake Boondooma.

Peaceful Lake Boondooma is a paradise for anglers, campers, birdwatchers and water sports enthusiasts. The 1900 hectare dam was purpose-built across the Boyne River in 1983 to provide a water supply to the Tarong Power Station. A mix of 200000 golden perch (yellowbelly), silver perch and Australian bass fingerlings are released annually into the dam, making it one of the most popular and consistent inland camping and fishing spots in South East Queensland. Sign up for the Boondooma Fishing Competition held each February or try your skill at numerous freshwater catch and release tournaments during the year. Lake Boondooma Caravan and Recreation Park, on the foreshores of the dam, offers caravan and camping sites, a bunkhouse and cabins along with tennis courts, modern amenities blocks, a kiosk and landscaped picnic and barbecue areas.

Boondooma Dam Yellowbelly Family Fishing Competition

The Boondooma Dam Yellowbelly Fishing Competition has established itself on the Queensland competition calendar, with registered competitors numbers increasing from 405 in 2008 to 1123 in 2019 a huge increase in the past 10 years.

As well as great fishing opportunities we attribute the growth to the family friendly nature of the event.

You can camp on the edge of the dam, and every year people come days before to set up camp to secure their prime position.

It's a relaxed competition-very family oriented and you don't have to catch a fish to win some amazing prizes, including this years AUD15,000 Boat and Trailer package.

The competitions growing reputation has helped us to secure some great prizes, thanks to our amazing Sponsors. This year we will be giving away up to AUD50,000 worth of prizes.

The competition is very affordable with Open and Junior sections. It is a great social weekend and people come from all over Queensland and Interstate.
