West Coast

Go west and weave your way along this wild coastline.

Old gold mining and jade hunting towns are dotted along the West Coast. Pan for gold at Greymouth and visit the replica gold mining town of Shantytown. Enjoy fine beer at the town’s local brewery Monteith’s Brewing Company, one of New Zealand’ oldest breweries. Shop for jade at historic Hokitika and hear of stories about ship wrecks, gold miners and pounamu hunters.

Follow the heritage walk at Reefton, the first town to use electric street lighting in the southern hemisphere. Check out the Pancake Rocks and blowholes at Punakaiki or walk New Zealand’s longest swing bridge at Westport. The most photographed lake in New Zealand, Lake Matheson provides remarkable reflections of New Zealand’s highest peaks, Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Walk the lakeside boardwalk through native forest.

A guided walk on the Franz Josef or Fox Glacier is a must if you’re visiting the West Coast. These giant tongues of ice have squeezed down the valleys to just 250 metres above sea level. Witness these amazing ice formations by taking a scenic flight or for a more unique experience take a heli-hike. This includes landing on the glaciers, then hiking through the snow and ice. With bright blue ice, tight crevasses and stunning scenery, your camera is sure to get a work out!

The perfect way to relax is in the Glacier Hot Pools, nestled in lush rainforests. Visit the West Coast Wildlife Centre, home to New Zealand’s rarest kiwi – the Rowi and Haast Tokoeka.

From thrilling adventures to laid back afternoons, the West Coast has you covered.
