Waddamana: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Waddamana Power Station Heritage Site

The Waddamana Power Station, located almost in the geographical centre of Tasmania, provides a unique look at the history and development of hydropower in Tasmania.
You can tour through the turbine hall, with hands-on exposure to the mighty pelton wheel turbines that first began generating electricity over a century ago.
The original machinery at Waddamana has been faithfully restored, along with some of the equipment from the old Shannon Power Scheme. And historical photographs and memories give an insight into what life was like in the early days of this small but social village deep in the Central Highlands.
Tours can be booked for groups of ten people or more.
Open daily 10am to 4pm (closed Good Friday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day).

Arthurs Lake

This popular angling location, east of Great Lake on the edge of the Central Plateau, has good facilities for boat launching and camping. To reach Arthurs Lake from the south, take the A5 for 50 km beyond Bothwell. From the north, follow the B51 for 60 km south of Cressy.
This is a high altitude and exposed location and weather in the highlands can change fast, making boating conditions dangerous. Please carry all required safety equipment and check local weather forecasts before you launch.

Highlands Power Trail

Tour the Highlands Power Trail for a unique experience in the rugged Central Highlands of Tasmania.
This self-guided driving trail provides an insight into the history of hydro power within Tasmania.
Stop at points of interest on the journey to see key sites and learn about the extraordinary challenges faced by the workers.
Take the circular trail north from Bothwell, heading towards Waddamana Village. Continue along to Penstock Lagoon and Waddamana Canal before re-joining the Highland Lakes Road for the return journey to Bothwell.
To make the most of your journey along the Highlands Power Trail, ensure you allow plenty of time to tour through Waddamana Power Station Heritage Site.
