Crowlands: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Langi Ghiran State Park

Rugged granite peaks and gentle sloping woodlands are the dominant features of this park. A pleasant walk to the mountain summit presents a view of ancient red gums on the surrounding plains skirted by Mount Buangor in the east and the Grampians in the distant west. Lar-ne-jeering (Langi Ghiran) is from the Djab Wurrung language meaning 'home of the black cockatoo'.

Before you go
Conditions can change in parks for many reasons. For the latest information on changes to local conditions, please visit the relevant park page on the Parks Victoria website.

Aradale, Lunatic Asylum

Aradale Asylum was an Australian psychiatric hospital, located in Ararat, a rural city in Victoria. Aradale was opened in 1867 and served as an asylum for psychiatric and intellectually handicapped patients until 1993. At its peak it housed almost 1,000 patients. J Ward became an annexe of Aradale in 1887 to house the criminally insane in a more secure facility.

Aradale was once known as the Ararat Lunatic Asylum. Aradale and its two sister asylums at Kew and Beechworth were commissioned to accommodate the growing number of 'lunatics' in the colony of Victoria. Construction began in 1860 and was opened for patients in 1865. It was closed as an asylum in 1998. At its height, Aradale had up to 900 patients yearly and is a large complex with up to 70 interesting historic abandoned buildings.

Walk through the cavernous wards and halls of the institution that treated and housed the mentally ill of Victoria for over 140 years.

Tours run each Sunday and Wednesday at 11:00am and 2:00pm, 90 to 120 minutes in duration. Group bookings can be arranged, limited to 25 people per group.

J Ward, Ararat's Old Gaol and Lunatic Asylum

Take a guided tour of J Ward, Ararat's Old Gaol and Lunatic Asylum. Hear stories of murderers, ghosts and mistreatment of mental illness.

J Ward is two and a half hours from Melbourne, close to the Grampians and open daily for tours by passionate Friends of J Ward volunteers. More than 10,000 people visit each year.

Tours run at 10:00am, 11:00am, 1:00pm and 2:00pm each day with extra tours at 12:00pm and 3:00pm on Sundays and Victorian public and school holidays (except Christmas Day).

J Ward started its life as a goldfields prison in 1859. When the gold ran out in the mid 1880s the prison buildings were acquired by the Lunacy Department as a temporary housing for the Criminally Insane. The County Gaol then became a ward (J Ward) of the Ararat Lunatic Asylum where the most depraved and most dangerous men in Victoria were housed in horrific conditions under the highest security.

Langi Morgala Museum

The large eclectic collection covers a wide variety of themes of local importance and includes objects from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Some of the individual collections are comprehensive and have been gathered with intent to demonstrate the history of a movement or an organisation over time.

The museum artefact, photographic and document collection is made up largely of donations by individuals within the Ararat district. Some domestic items are on open display in six themed 'rooms'. Large pieces of machinery are displayed outside, along with the refurbished blacksmiths shop.

The collection is strong in aspects of the nineteenth and early twentieth century history of the town and district. Some more contemporary items, such as those relating to local World Champion and Olympic Cyclist Shane Kelly OAM and other local identities are also in the collection.

The museum also houses the largest collection of Aboriginal artefacts in Victoria, (the Mooney and Best collections), items with provenance to the Ararat goldfields, objects from the large squatters estates in the district, items relating to farming, commerce, war, social, domestic and community life. The surviving collection of an earlier Ararat Borough Museum set up around 1900 also form part of the collection.

Wine and Symphony

Spend the afternoon in the spectacular grounds of Mount Langi Ghiran. Wine, cheese feast, vineyard promenade, sun basking culminating with 40 minutes of performance by four classical musicians, a glass of Langi Shiraz in your hand.

Beginning at 3:00pm, Mount Langi Ghiran invites you to wander the vineyard, discovering the vines that produce the wines in your glass. A remarkable selection of cheeses will be set near our original bocce court surrounded by acres of vines. Enjoy the most beautiful view of the property from there. Cushions and rugs will be scattered on the grass to lie back in the embrace of Mount Langi Ghiran and Mount Cole until the performance starts.

This will be fourth year Langi hosts classical musicians to perform in the winery. In four years we learned that there is something unique in creating an experience that pairs cool climate wines and classical music performance.

Wine and Symphony enriches such an experience. Arriving in the winery transformed into a theatre with an imposing wall of barrels as the backdrop, you will be greeted with the finest of Mount Langi Ghiran wines. A glass of Langi Shiraz in your hand, the musicians arrive and the performances start.

Hotel Sorrento by Hannie Rayson - Ararat

The award-winning play Hotel Sorrento by Australian Playwright Hannie Rayson, which inspired the film of the same name, tells the story of three sisters who grew up together in the seaside town Sorrento.

Hilary lives in the family home in Sorrento with her father and 16 year-old son. Pippa, a business woman, is visiting from New York and Meg, a successful writer, returns from England. When the three sisters are reunited after 10 years apart they again feel the constraints of family life. A semi autobiographical book written by middle sister and expat Meg triggers the familial tensions and dramas that eventuate. The play is about family in a literal and metaphorical sense and the importance of blood ties and collective memory, true or false.
