Talbot

The best way to explore the little town of Talbot is on foot, but it is important that your first stop is the Tourism Information office in Goldfields Antiques to get your hands on a local guide and map. The tour takes you past the town's finest old buildings and the guide fills you in on their history and background. The highlights include the post office, the court house, railway station, town hall, Soldiers Memorial Park, St Michaels Church, the old flour mill and the intriguingly named Bull and Mouth Hotel. Open on Sunday afternoon, the local museum is housed in a consecrated building once known as the Primitive Methodist Church. With a few directions from the locals, you will find Aboriginal wells and a hollowed-out gum tree which Aboriginal women used during the birthing of their children. Talbot lies on the central Victorian goldfields trail which is centred on the historic old town of Maryborough. The circuit's attractions include prospecting, wine-sipping, fishing, bush-walking, bird-watching or communing with nature or whatever else takes your fancy.
