Ngamadjidj Shelter - Wartook Valley

Ngamadjidj (pronounced NG as in sing, DJ as in jaw) is on the western edge of the ranges near a small secluded waterhole. Remains of campfires and stone tools used by the Jardwadjali have been found here, which suggests it was a favoured camping place. The paintings at this site are unusual because only white clay was used.

Elsewhere in Gariwerd the paintings were mostly done with red pigment. The remnants of sixteen painted figures are on this panel, but some are becoming very faint. Unfortunately nothing is known about the meaning of these paintings. The traditional lifestyle of the Jarwadjali was destroyed before it could be recorded.

Gulgurn Manja Shelter - Laharum

Gulgurn Manja (pronounced Gulkurn Manya) meaning hands of young people, is a rock shelter at the northern tip of Gariwerd. From here the small groups of Jardwadjali would have been ideally positioned to see the fires of other groups on the plains to the north.

They also used the local finegrained sandstone to make stone tools. Marks where stone has been broken from the walls can still be seen in this shelter.

The paintings at Gulgurn Manja include bars, emu tracks and handprints. Handprints such as these are only found in northern Gariwerd, and many here were done by children, hence the Aboriginal name for the site. These paintings were part of a unique local art style which was used to tell stories and pass on the law of the people.

Espresso coffee and lunch platters can also be enjoyed while taking in the tranquil surrounds. Or take a tour and learn about the process from olive tree to bottle: from sustainable organic growing to harvesting, cold-pressing and hand-bottling.

During harvest season which is May to June , you can watch the team cold pressing fresh organic olives into oil. The press is the only one in the region and reduces the time between picking the olives and pressing them, maximising flavour and retaining antioxidants.

OZACT Presents Shakespeare's Tempest in the Grampians at Spectacular Heatherlie Quarry

After a sell out summer season, OZACT is set to return to its Grampians home, the spectacular Heatherlie Quarry with its signature production of Shakespeare's Tempest, a timeless tale of revenge and romance, with magic and intrigue, comedy and song.

As Prospero raises his staff and summons the spirits of the sky, a mighty tempest forms. Beneath the towering slopes of Mt Difficult lie the mighty walls of Heatherlie Quarry, nestled in a serene and beautiful bush setting; punctuated by sandy clearings with remnants and reminders of a vanished settlement. This environment creates a wonderful setting for the island wilderness represented in the Tempest.

So bring along a cushion, and someone you love, or a whole group of people you love and become enthralled with one of Shakespeare's most celebrated plays. The Tempest promises an event to remember.
