Places nearby Yea

Set in lush dairying country on the banks of a Goulburn River tributary, about 105km north-east of Melbourne, Yea is an area of great natural beauty where forests, ferneries, waterfalls and cascades abound.

There is some spectacular gorge country between Yea and Tallabrook, where verdant fern gullies play a significant role in making this one of Victoria's most picturesque regions.

Kinglake National Park, 30km south-west of Yea, is an especially beautiful and tranquil reserve. There are some great camping spots along the nearby Goulburn River, and Yea provides easy access to the mountain country south of Eildon Weir, which is only a short drive away.

Look for the local wineries, too, for a cellar-door purchase to go with the specialty cheeses on sale at Ballantyne's Cheeses. You can meet wombats, platypuses and lyrebirds and wonder at the spectacular waterfalls at the Murrindi Reserve, 11km out of town.

Yea: Where To Go / Sightseeing

Yea Wetlands

Take the time to enjoy a leisurely stroll along the paths and raised walkways observing nature doing its thing on the Yea River floodplain.

You will have the opportunity to see platypus, rakali (native water rats), sacred king fisher, koala, sugar glider or maybe the rare and ancient damselfly described in scientific journals as a 'living fossil'.

Walk the Franklin Track and discover information about the Taungurung Clan, the Aboriginal community that lived in this area prior to European settlement. Learn about their people, their history, food culture and relationship with the environment.

The multi award winning Y Water Discovery Centre on the corner of Hood and High Street is just three years old and is a must see attraction. The striking architecture, accredited Visitor services and hands-on Interpretive Centre is at the entry to the wetlands.

The interpretive displays focus on our most valued export - water - and all the life dependent on it. The Centre informs people about that precious, yet controversial water resource as well as the birds, and animals that form part of the important ecology of the disappearing wetlands.

A leisurely 60 minute stroll through the Yea Wetlands is simply a must.

Cheviot Tunnel

The historic Cheviot Tunnel is a key feature of the Tallarook to Mansfield Rail Line which operated between 1883 and 1970 and now the Great Victorian Rail Trail open to walkers, cyclists and horse riding enthusiasts. The Great Victorian Rail Trail meanders through undulating farmland along the majestic gum lined Goulburn River with stunning views into the foothills of the Victorian High Country.

Being the only tunnel on this line, and made using handmade bricks using local clay, which remain in excellent condition today it has tremendous heritage values.

The Cheviot Tunnel was constructed to pass trains across the Black Range at McLoughlin's Gap roughly half way between Yea and Molesworth.

The tunnel was constructed from an estimated 675,000 handmade bricks using local clay. This was sourced from Quinlan's pit in a nearby paddock just west of the Tunnel. Some steel hooks that held lanterns in emergencies still exist near the four indented safety alcoves. These are located at regular intervals along the eastern wall.

The Cheviot Tunnel is situated between the towns of Yea and Molesworth on the Great Victorian rail Trail.
