This gracious Victorian home dates from 1865. The house, the adjoining oast house (Circa 1912) and the gardens are listed by The National Trust. The house was acquired by the present owner in 1999 and after extensive renovations became a B and B in 2001. The Official Meet and Greet Committee are 3 very friendly golden retrievers - collectively they are known as The Goldie Gang.
There are 5 guest rooms in this magnificent house...all are very large, as are the ensuites. They have been tastefully furnished - mostly with antiques.There is comfortable seating in all rooms, and The Blue Room and The Matilda Suite have spas. A full breakfast is included in the tariff.
Matildas of Ranelagh is considered one of the most important houses in the Huon Valley. It is in the heart of the Valley (only 2km from Huonville and 30 minutes from Hobart). The house is surrounded by the apple orchards, which gave Tasmania the name The Apple Isle. More recent planting of cherry orchards are giving the Huon Valley another dimension and flavour.
Hit the Huon Trail - Take a drive to Geeveston - jumping off point for the new Tahune Airwalk. Drive through apple, pear and cherry orchards, or visit one of the vineyards springing up in this part of Tasmania. Marvel at the majestic Huon River as it winds its way towards the DEntrecasteaux Channel. The waterways in the Huon Valley are simply magnificent.
After a hard days touring why not light up the barbecue, or relax in the drawing room, meet fellow travellers, and have a sundowner - a beer, a cocktail, or select a bottle of the owners estate grown wine from the Great Southern in Western Australia - Matildas Meadow.
